Discuss the keeping of blue ribbon eels

They used to say that about goldfish. Then it spread to all fish but it's not true. Fish will grow to their natural size. That's why you have to be carefull what fish to buy for your size aquarium. BRE will grow 43" plus.

a pair of these just bred at the Steinhart aquarium. The spawn is supposedly fertile, as i saw some very early development photos. In general eels have ridiculously long planktonic phases, and so far have been impossible to raise the larvae

What was interesting about that was that the eels remained black in color, yet obviously at least the female was sexually mature.

Hi I kept one for 3 years.

The shop couldnt get it feeding so i took it off to them cheap and had it feeding in a week lucky you might say but one thing i learnt was they need to feel safe before they will eat! I had them in 40mm pipes which i covered in sand i have a few videos if anyone is intrested

Inthen had 3 imported the UK these were juv about 12 inches long no problem here either I found the smaller they were the better they fed

I don't believe light has much to do with it once they were in the display they were under led lights with no problem

A few people say they have poor sight but I found they could see you enter the room and come out of the pipes etc

I found they liked chopped up silversides

Never

Post a video. I always wanted to get one. I am turned off by the fact that when ever I see them in the aquarium stores there are kept in a little plastic tank within a tank.

This is all true. The key to getting them to eat is to get them feeling comfortable and safe. A very tight fitting pipe that is longer than their body is a must. Two eels will fit in one 1/2" PVC pipe. Juvenile eels seem to be more adaptable to captive feeding than adults.

Live fish and/or shrimp should be speared and offered to them via a stick, and then slowly acclimated to fish flesh. These eels are piscivores in the wild.

I've had a BRE for almost a month now. I have put the pipe in for the eel to be housed in. I have fed it live shrimp and dead shrimp on tongs and a stick. I have fed it live and dead fish on tongs and a stick. I have tried feeding it during the day; at night. I have tried feeding it with no fish in the tank. I have tried feeding it with other fish in the tank. I have feed it octopus. I tried flakes. Absolutely nothing.

I read on a ********* article that these eels are commonly caught by using Cyanide. I was starting think that maybe the eels that are eating in peoples aquariums are caught with a net and the ones that aren't eating are the ones that have been caught using cyanide.

I also think my eel has a neurological problem or something judging by what I recorded here.

What size tanks are you guys keeping them in? Is it better to start with a smaller tank and then move them to a larger tank once fully acclimated and eating?

I don't have a BRE but I do have a White Ribbon Eel. He is 24 inches long and a pig. I was worried the first few days because I couldn't get it to eat any frozen food. After a few days of trying I got him to eat some frozen krill. 2 days later he started eating silversides. He also ate my diamond watchman as well... He swims openly in the tank when he is hungry. He comes out to feed after I feed the other fish mysis or squid. Once he's out I dangle the silverside in front of him with a pair of feeder tongs. He chows down and goes back in his hole after.

Hello, first post here, Google search found this thread.

I have a 60 gallon salt tank, have had it since about 1981 or 1982 I think, with one denizen in it (well, not counting the snail on cleaning duties) - a Ribbon Eel.

I'm pretty sure it's the oldest living Ribbon Eel in captivity ... I'm not sure exactly when we (my ex and I) first got it, but I think it was in 1982. It's definitely over 30 years old now ... at this point I'm pretty darn sure it'll outlive me! :-o

I wish I had some great secret to impart on its longevity, but I don't. I feed it 2 or 3 dozen feeder guppies a week, pretty much on a weekly schedule as that's when it starts to come out and get all excited whenever it sees me coming up to the tank so I figure that's my signal that it's hungry ...

I thought maybe someplace like the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco would be interested in studying it, but they seem to be doing pretty well with their own!

Bre are escape artists. They like their food close. I kept one quite well feeding squid soaked in vitamins that I presented on a blunted pin siliconed into some rigid plastic tubing. Over time the eel became bolder and would extend much farther from his hidey hole in the rock. Very very interesting and worth the effort.

i have a white one. but this weekend i want to buy another one. Can i have any problems to keep 2 eels in a tank?

I had a Black ribbon eel. he was great. took almost 2 months for me to see him eating frozen food.

I fed the other fish in the tank jumbo mysis. I was feeding him Live ghost shrimp and he ate those after 2 days. turns out he was picking up the Jumbo shrimp off the floor of the tank when the other fish were done eating. i saw this and knew he was eating frozen. i sat with him for a couple hours before he ate 1 silverside. after that ate like a pig.

had hime for over a year and did not change to the blue color. stayed solid black with a yellow stripe.

it was very frustrating for a long time with him. i stuck with it and it was well worth it. not alot of people have any success stories with these animals.

i have no idea how this animal was harvested. he looked happy and active at the store is how i picked him out. i made a maze of pvc for him to feel comfortable in. he was always in that and came all the way out for feeding.

i would definatly get another one if my tank allowed
