Disease Forum Dwellers

I've noticed my growing interest in fish disease, maybe it's due to winter Wisconsin, it's hard to say. I've been reading disease texts, helping locals and trying to chime in here so Snorvich doesn't develop carpal tunnel. I've noticed others tend to frequent this forum as well. If you care to, let's start a little introduction.

Years in the hobby?
Quarantine protocol?
Most used antibiotic?
Fish disease horror story?
Best success story?
Do you ever find yourself discussing fish disease with non-hobbyists or diagnosing the sickly in the lfs?
Do you have a medical background?
Any general advice for others about fish disease?

Thanks. At times I get mentally burned out, so help is always greatly appreciated

Years in the hobby? Freshwater since 1957, saltwater since 1986, reef since 1991, 3000 ocean dives
Quarantine protocol? Tank transfer followed by at least three weeks of acclimation and observation with Prazipro
Most used antibiotic?
Fish disease horror story? My first FOWLR tank I encountered velvet on my favorite fish (Queen Angel)
Best success story? Many on here, probably in the hundreds by now
Do you ever find yourself discussing fish disease with non-hobbyists or diagnosing the sickly in the lfs? I previously accepted calls from an LFS but found I could not keep up
Do you have a medical background? College biology, marine biology readings
Any general advice for others about fish disease? Do not depend on visible symptoms exclusively, learn to read behavior

Great idea

Years in the hobby? 11 years - reef only
Quarantine protocol? Tank Transfer Method & 12 weeks quarantine including inverts
Most used antibiotic? Erythromycin
Fish disease horror story? Added non-quarantined snails that I swooshed in 3 bowls of water to my display - week later everyone was gasping from gill flukes
Best success story? 2 severely infected clowns with marine velvet & secondary infections
Do you ever find yourself discussing fish disease with non-hobbyists or diagnosing the sickly in the lfs? Yes, it's to the point Tyler won't listen anymore
Do you have a medical background? No, but I'm a local Wildlife Rehabilitation Volunteer
Any general advice for others about fish disease? It is often wise to choose the least noxious method for treatment. In some cases the best course is observation.

Years in the hobby?

Two and a half.

Quarantine protocol?

4 weeks seachem cupramine, then remove copper and observe for 4 weeks, with 300% Prazi.

Most used antibiotic?

Split between Furan and Erythromycin.

Fish disease horror story?

I work at an LFS and we used De-Los. I think that's enough information.

Best success story?

Recently helped save a friend's tank from velvet after his Clown Trigger caught a nasty case of it.

Do you ever find yourself discussing fish disease with non-hobbyists or diagnosing the sickly in the lfs?

Constantly. And I work at an LFS, so constantly.

Do you have a medical background?

No, my background is in general science in college and then physics in uni.

Any general advice for others about fish disease?

Quarantine and observe always.

Years in the hobby? About 6

Quarantine protocol? TTM then observe 4 weeks with prazi

Most used antibiotic?

Fish disease horror story? Just ich when I first started

Best success story? After ich I found this site and have not had an illness in the tank since.

Do you ever find yourself discussing fish disease with non-hobbyists or diagnosing the sickly in the lfs? on occasion

Do you have a medical background? No

Any general advice for others about fish disease? Stick to your QT regimen and you can have a disease free tank.

Great idea!

Years in the hobby? 2.5
Quarantine protocol? Prazi x2 + TTM followed by 1-2 weeks observation
Most used antibiotic? Kanamycin
Fish disease horror story? Crypto outbreak from a piece of coral; took forever to get rid of the parasite due to poor bio-security (had my QTs/HTs right next to my DT).
Best success story? Successfully cleared a Royal Gramma of crypto, even though they are notorious for succumbing quickly to the parasite.
Do you ever find yourself discussing fish disease with non-hobbyists or diagnosing the sickly in the lfs? No to the former, yes to the latter. Have to restrain myself at the LFS here in my area because most have terrible looking livestock.
Do you have a medical background? No, undergraduate in Biology
Any general advice for others about fish disease? Develop a sound QT practice and stick to it. Only trust yourself to quarantine properly assuming the above.

Years in the hobby?11 years
Quarantine protocol? TT with Prazi followed by 1 month observation. Inverts and corals 12 weeks.
Most used antibiotic?
Fish disease horror story? Just one? After upgrading from a 55 I had a tang in a QT and he was doing great. After 3 weeks in a battery fell in the QT. The tang was gasping and lying on the bottom so I did a large water change but it didn't help. I put him in a bucket with water from the DT and he would occasionally upright. By now it was midnight in the winter and I didn't have an extra heater so I put him in the refugium. The next morning he was dead. A few days later some fish were flashing and had spots. Thinking it was ich I moved them into a QT and began treating with CP. After much fighting with dosages, water changes (fish didn't handle the CP well), setting up 5 new QTs I ended up losing all my fish. Turns out it was velvet.
Best success story? Cured a flame angel of brook then had to cured him of flukes which took months.
Do you ever find yourself discussing fish disease with non-hobbyists or diagnosing the sickly in the lfs?yes to diagnosing.
Do you have a medical background?Yes, radiology
Any general advice for others about fish disease?
Quarantine everything!
