can distilled water be used as top off water

I used it for years before I finally broke down and bought a RO/DI (won't live without one now) I think the only thing that I read you have to worry is if they use copper coils to condense the water to make the distilled water but I never in 10 plus years (that I had to use it) had trouble with store bought distilled water.
