dive computer recommendations

My ancient US Divers computer finally died. Need a new one. Any recommedations, or ones to stay away from? I see a new wireless-wrist watchlike style is now out there.

Depends on your budget. I use an Atomic Cobalt. It's air integrated and has a big, easy to read color display. I don't like the wrist computers personally, as they are too difficult for me to read. The Cobalt is not cheap by any stretch, but I've been very pleased with it.

I like my suunto d4i. But I have to be extra careful about not leaving it places. My dad dives with an oceanic pro plus 2 and enjoys it. It has big visible numbers and you can find them used pretty cheap.

The wireless wrist computers have been on the market for years. Ive owned several of the Oceanic VT wrist computers. I really like Oceanic. My one caution would be that some models can be a bit complicated to use if you don't dive a lot.

oceanic geo line of nitrox watches are tough, easy to use and read and have the great oceanic warranty. I have the old style geo2 and love it, its a workhorse of a watch with a very agressive algorhythm.

I commercial spearfish a good bit and trust my life to the Geo2. Just my 2cents. Black friday sales just around the corner!

i have been diving a Galileo Luna for over 4 years, 365 every weekend minimum. I just got around to changing the original battery on the wrist unit last week. real easy to change, grab a quarter, turn the slot and swap the battery. Keep this in mind, as some vendors make you send the unit in to change the battery.

air integrated x-mitter, compass, trimix capable and rock solid reliable with a very low failure rate.

downloads are a cinch too, no more log books.

its much bigger than some of the wristwatch styles you see which makes the display easy on the eyes...especially when you're narced out @ 130' :)

I noticed a bunch of problems with the Suunto D4's with premature battery failure and some of them going on the fritz early on.

There was a "glut" of units here when they ran a special on them a couple of years ago, so a lot of people had them. Might be hit and miss if you get a good one. I had some buddies on their 3rd one in under a year. i think they fixed a lot of issues with the d4i.

you wanna break the bank, the shearwater petrel is what all the cool kids are diving....its more of a tech dive computer, but has a bit of cross over to rec diving.

good luck and good diving!!

I dive currently with an oceanic veo nx 100. But your choice will depend 100% on what your intended use will be. If you need something simple, inexpensive and reliable give the suunto zook a try. If you use basic nitrox with deeper recreational no-deco dives, something similar to mine is perfect for $200.

I would also stick with wrist computers as it is much safer to have that information in front of you. what if car makers put your gauges in the backseat on a retractor or next to the center console?

I use a suunto zoop. It's a cheap entry level computer and if you are renting a bcd/reg they will likely have a zoop if they supply a computer. Gives a nice backup and you'll be familiar.

I figure I can use it as a backup when I buy a nicer computer down the road.
