Dive no 3 photos Maui

fatrip,
make someday sooner if you can...I've always wanted to get into diving and let life get in the way. I'm glad I made the time now. It's awe inspiring and very humbling when you take it all in. And how wonderous the beginnings of life on earth came from and evolved from the water. And the inspiration for the reef keeping hobby and the importance of how your actions directly and indirectly impact the ocean. It's one of my more satisfying pursuits.

What kind of camera did you use?

Love the octo shot. That's the coolest.

For this set of photos, I used the Olympus FE-280 with Olympus PT-038 underwater case with threaded Fantasea red filter (must have red filter for daylight underwater). $450 for all 3.

This point and shoot camera is light and worry free. I have spare sunpak strobe handle from other setup and used it as a base/handle that I have a 10 inch line attached to with a quick disconnect clip. I clip this to the left side of my BC so that I have my right arm free to get into position and then switch and shoot the pic. The metal base and handle from the sunpak strobe allows for protection and I can just let go of the camera and handle safety stop or whatever without compromising safety from worrying about the camera.

For daytime this thing is great. For nighttime it's not so hot and the sunpak strobe is not so hot since it seems to over expose. I played with the settings but have still not perfected it and am not so sure the olympus can even handle night shots. For point and shoot since it has 3 underwater presets and basic underwater shots the thing works rather well in the day.

For nighttime which is to be put up. I used Sony psc-150 loaded in Ikelight Case and Ikelight red slip on filter. That camera works with the strobe, but requires more tinkering with settings. And the night photos were disappointing at the best description. For I do not have the camera settings down cold as of yet.
BUT....I did use the Sony for all 3 of yesterday's day dives and while it was not so plug and play the photos especially the close up macro stuff were better. I even have non-ghost like photos of huge ray buzzing around us during the dive. (other attempts with olympus the image was so out of focus and the camera was unable to pick up the image to the point they look like ghostly outlines)

Next year, I will be armed with some type of underwater case for digital SLR if funds allow.
