Diver re-cert in Tuscaloosa

Hey guys. I was hoping one of y'all could help me out. I got my diver certification back when I was 17 but because of a lot of things I was never able to go on a dive after I completed the program. Well it's been five years and I'd like to try again but the group I did last time doesn't exist anymore so I figured someone on here could help. :hmm5: I'm currently in Tuscaloosa most of the time but traveling to Birmingham is no problem so I'm just wondering if anyone has a good recommendation for a dive shop or other group to take the dive class/certification again. Thanks guys!

I got certified at a place on 15th Street in Tuscaloosa. I don't remember the name, but it was the place with a big great white shark statue in the front. This was about 5 or 6 years ago though, so I am not sure if it is even still there.

I was certified at Blue Water in Pelham. I'm sure if you can't find info anywhere else, they can point you in the right direction.

If you're in school at UA, check for a dive program there. Much cheaper.

I think they canceled the dive program here at UA a couple years ago after a student died in the practice pool.

you know you dont have to get your dive recert. you are actually good for life (would be smart if you feel uncomfortable to not go without a little refresher course)

And generally, a dive outfit will give you a refresher on the basics when you book with them. I've only gone a few years (max) between diving excursions (just ended a 2.5 year span of no diving, which may be my longest since being certified). There's definitely no requirement for any kind of re-cert for sport diving. Good point, btb.

My husband and I got certified through Southern Skin Divers in Birmingham and they are great people!!! I would recommend them!

I heard the reason why the student died was because he went to the surface to quickly while he was holding his breath and it caused an anerism to his brain. Could have been a different student at a different school. Not sure!!!

Therefore, a refresher course would be good for you so you can remember the small things like that. Just call and talk to them because they schedule classes and group trips all the time.

SF2K4,

If you were certified by PADI, they offer a Scuba Review that can be done by a Dive Master for cheap.

One of the best shops around on gear and training is Dive Sports in Decatur - www.divesports.com

They regularly travel to Bluewater in Birmingham and would be glad to meet you there and help you out.

Call and ask for Brad and he can hook you up or tell you who to use.
