I'm not sure why they've been putting those uglies up recently. They are a discounted price but are objectively unattractive, IMO.

looks pretty standard fare for a spooked foxface... They'll go almost completely mottled when startled (like someone popping in to take a pic)

yea, that top one is totally flared out which is it's defensive posture... those spines are like bee stings.

They're one of my favorite fish, but yes, they all look extremely terrible when you first get them

+1... Should have got a better pic, but I don't think there is anything wrong with the fish

The fish are healthy, otherwise they would not be listed for sale. The fish get stressed from the photo taking process and species such as these and many of the wrasses will show this through changes in coloration. Other species could be just as stressed, but they don't change color to indicate this.

So do the fish look healthy?

I see no cause for concern when I look at them. DD has a stellar reputation and has been mentioned that is their startled/spooked complexion. They are skittish fish in a new environment I'd consider it normal.

They look perfectly normal. My one spot turns almost grey when I'm working in my tank.

I think it depends on the one spot some don't scare as easily as others do. You think they look weird now you should see when the go to bed at night, I don't think there is a yellow spec on them.

They look fine to me; good luck if you want one. One of my favorite fish.

I was told that's toxins they push up to their spines when they are irritated.

You were definitely told wrong. Foxfaces or any of the venomous (not poisonous) species can't secrete venom unless the integumens over the dorsal spines are pushed down, as they would be if something got poked.

As mentioned, all we're seeing is the foxfaces' natural stress/sleeping coloration...actually more like a "halfway" version of it.

Now, DD should try for "unstressed" photos, for sure, but it may be all they could get at the time since new foxfaces are often a bit skittish.

Sort of hearsay, but anyway...I don't keep any rabbitfish, but hang around the fish disease forum a lot. Its very common to see folks concerned over this type of coloring in these fish. The people who know them then always reply that this normal. I agree with some of the posts above; I doubt DD would ever post pics of problem fish without a disclaimer. They do occasionally offer fish with nothing more than a harmless odd color patch, etc.; but always state that this is the case. They are the gold standard in their field, IMO & IME.

+1 on normal response to stressors like a photo being taken. When mine goes to sleep at night, he's in what I call "full military camo." All mottled, spines extended. Pretty cool-looking, IMO.

With all the wonderful selection of fish why is this fish so appealing to ppl healthy or not. Not a fan.

A Foxface can be quite awesome. My 7" Magnificent Foxface eats from my hand. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And for the record, the coloration on those fish is perfectly normal. If DD photographed them 20 seconds later, they might have already been completely yellow, they change colors very fast. Not mine but here is an example

Great video and beautiful fish!

This is a great fish! If you ever have any algae issues, and I mean any, put one of these im and you will never see that algae again as long as theyre there. Ive had a few varieties of these and they are wonderful, colorful and great temperament. Aside from being alittle skittish, they never have an issue w any other fish Ive had. Great fish & Perfectly healthy speciments in those pictures. I actually kind of like it when they flare out, they freeze in the water column and just flare, looks awesome.

Getting to the party late here, but here is a recent cell pic of my 6" Magnificent doing its disappearing act:

This was one of its better attempts, LOL. I have seen it do this right in the middle of the white sandbed, which is not quite as effective :)
