Dividing a tank for a mantis

I wasn't exactly sure where to post this so i did here, i was wondering if its possible for me to use an egg crate or some other type material to section off my aquarium to have a section for a mantis, i dont want to have to do a whole new setup. Maybe even an eggracte wrapped in some sorta of mesh or plastic screening material to prevent other fish from passing through and becoming pray. i want to know if this has been down before and or if it is this possible. The tank ill have is a 90g. I was thinking maybe sectioning it off at like 40 or 42 inches, to give the mantis either 11.5 or 15 gallons of swimming room. The tank is 48x24x18, FYI.

A mantis will probably bash its way through egg crate. I watched a mantis in a loosely divided shrimp keeper, at the LFS. Over the course of a couple weeks he knocked out some walls and went from one 6" section to roaming the entire 2' length. Ironic thing is, as far as I know, he didn't bother the other shrimp in there.
Thats not to say you can't divide a tank for a mantis. Many have done it to smaller tanks, such as 30 gal's, so that they can keep several mantis in one tank. But you are going to have to do more than just a slip in divider. You would be better off siliconing in a piece of acrylic.
Or, provided the species you get is a little on the mellow side, you can try keeping your mantis well fed, a ready supply of snails and hermits, and fast moving fish, and there is a desent chance the mantis will leave your fish alone. The only problem is that its a little rare to find specific species offered for sale.

We use egg crate to divid many of our tanks. O.s G. graphurus and G. chiragra will usually bread through, but spearers can't. To contain the more powerful smashers, we fit a 4 inch piece of plexiglass to both sides of the bottom of the divider. Cable ties work well if you drill small holes in the plexi. Usually the animals will try to break through the bottom of the partition and the plexiglass stops them.

i was planning on maybe getting a Neogondactylus Wennerae from Tampabaysaltwater.com, is there anything you could suggest that would work that wouldnt have to be glued in place, maybe eggcrate with a mesh material?

.A 5.5 gallon would be large enough for an N Wennerae and not expensive to set up. If you can resist the temptation to upgrade it for just a couple of corals ;)
