At one point many years go you were also collecting "Keys" live rock. Do you still have your site, and do you still harvest from the keys?

Ty

Yes I have a site also in the keys, in the Marine Sanctuary behind Davis reef, worked my rear end off for years developing it....over 175 trips with with the boat full of rock out to the site, deploying-diving-arranging it.....started it in the 90's.....

Unfortunately, found out that live rock aquaculture does not work well in the Keys. The ocean is to dynamic, every storm/hurricane...sandblasts the rock back to like the day I put it in the water...or buries it in sand....and then it starts all over again. I sure wish I had put all my rock on my Gulf site as the rock I grow there is 100 times better than what is produced at my keys site.

Keys rock, even back in the days when we were collecting the existing wild rock, was always just 'Coraline rock'...not much anything else growing on it....whereas the rock from my Gulf site thrives with life, there is no comparison. So needless to say, I do not make the 400 mile drive and three day adventure to the keys to get any as I have a much better product 20 miles from my doorstep here in the Gulf!

TY Richard for some insight on Florida keys rock. Trying to get everything I need to set up my 72g bow. Looking at getting led's, that won't break the bank. I will also need more rock, as I will be moving my 40 breeder mixed reef over. So would you recommend cycling the tank first and then move corals and rock over or what?

Yup...get some real live sand...not the stuff from a bag...and some rock...and bacteria.....let the tank run a week at least...then move in!

Basically like putting the first 1/2 of my "Package" in the tank....all the live sand and 1/2 of the rock....
