Diving back in

Hey guys!

I am somewhat new to the club. I had a couple nano reef tanks when I was in college and meet a handful of club members from buying frags back then. Unfortunately, moving from apartment to apartment and long hours at work caused my tank to crash so I decided to get out of the hobby at that time.

I now live in Fenton and have a three year old son that loves fish and the ocean so yesterday I bought an 150 gallon tank off of Craigslist.

At this point I'm a little in over my head, but I'm good at doing research online and confident I'll get this tank up and running.

Here are a few pictures of what I brought home yesterday.

The tank. This SOB sure is heavy!

I'm guessing this is an RODI unit.

Not real sure what I've got here. It may be missing some pieces.

Miscellaneous bucket of stuff.

I haven't had time to go through everything yet, and I have no idea if any of it works, but I only paid $175 for everything. Hopefully I did OK.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself since I'm sure I'll have tons of questions in the coming days/weeks/months.

Welcome back to the addiction Jeff. These forums are a plethora of knowledge. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask and we'll try to help anyway we can.

We have a few good pizza nights coming up in the next few months you should think about coming to. You'll meet good people and be able to pick their brains on things you have questions about.

Thanks!

That sounds good. I'll see if I can make the next pizza night.

Welcome back to the madness

I'd suggest to look into some new lighting, depending on what corals you would like to keep . Power compacts are almost if not obsolete nowadays.

The RODI is a good start. I'd look into adding a couple more canisters for a few more filtets

All in all you got whats needed to fill the tank up and get it salty. Keep us updated and like keggo said ask questions

Welcome back in. I leave you with simple words of advice for this hobby. Spend the money on good items now and it will save you a lot more than you know in the long run. Hope to see you at a pizza night.

Yeah some upgrades will definitely be in order, but currently I hope to get it together as is as much as I can and then upgrade from there.

This is very sound advice.

This is good, but like Smack said,I would get new lighting as a priority, that fixture doesnt look too reliable. I definitely wouldnt buy new bulbs for it.

I think there's a second RODI filter in that tub.

I also think that you got a decent deal for $175.

And welcome back.

If I were you I'd spend some time reading the stickies on the main RC New to the Hobby page. Lots of great info there.

Don't worry I won't be investing any money in that lightning fixture.

First question for you guys: Is there a good source to buy bulkheads locally or should I just order them online? Also, the same question for sand.

I would invest in some used newer LED's like Kessil's, AI, or Ecotech. Lots of ecotechs are coming up for sale now that G4's are out. With the newer Apex out for sale lots of the classic's are popping up used for sale now. In my experience the computer, lights and sump were the best investments for my system. The apex really opened up so many things and stopped my constant fiddling; after not fiddling with everything and letting my system run "solo" for a week or two everything really became happy and super stable (like never before). I tried every type of light I could get my hands on, PC,MH, T5HO, and always wondered what was better, then I got some echotech G3 pro's after a recommendation of a friend and they (LED's) answered the question; Every coral has been super happy since I upgraded. In the past I just got a sump that fit under the display without really planning things out. When I setup this DT I listened to advice and got a sump that was a bit smaller than I would have but its layout was perfect for holding future upgrades. Now I run a UV filter, carbon reactor, 2x dosers, 2x heaters, oversized skimmer, ATO, pumps, and tons of probes with lots of space to work with even still.
just my thoughts, welcome back to the habit!

Yeah I really like the idea of LED lighting but know very little about them, but as it is with everything else in this hobby, Google is my best friend. :)

Hopefully I can find a good deal on a used lighting system when the time comes.

Google is not your friend, we are;)

How many posts do you need before you see the Hardware for sale folder on RC? I have gotten a few items from RC sales with good results.
