DivingTheWorld's Custom Leemar 80g Rimless Reef

Yeah, so much money though! I'm thinking about going old school AC for reliability. I just don't want the tank to get louder. It's super quiet now.

If you want to go AC, look for any Askoll-based pump. They are rock solid and very quiet. I have a Vertex V6 that's almost silent and actually uses almost the same power as many DC pumps (1584 GPH @ 65 watts). For comparison, my Ecotech Marine M1 that I have on my other tank is 2000 GPH @ 80 watts. The new S1 is 1400 GPH @ 55 watts.

The V6 isn't cheap at $400, but it's extremely reliable and I don't expect it to suddenly die like many DC pumps. If you can find a used ATB Flowstar, it's essentially the same pump.

Premium Aquatics just sent out a sale on those vertex pump 299 is pretty good.

That's definitely an interesting pump. I like the other Vertex stuff I've purchased. I may have to pick one of those up. Does it come with the filter tube they show attached to it? How far does that thing stick out? Not sure if it will fit in my tank like that. What do you use for a filter/strainer to keep out rogue snails?

I don't. I have a royal exclusive red dragon 150w and I just use a 90 degree PVC elbow at a 45 degree angel. Plus my return section is filter by a sponge strainer that came with my trigger system.

What camera do you use to take pics? I just got a D3400 and am so lost on how to take pics with it.

I have a Nikon D90 and Tokina Macro lens which I use with a Avast Portal XL. I'm not a great photographer, so I use an external flash which cuts most of the blue light out.

Ok I see now. I've been researching and everyone says to get a macro lens to get better pics. All I have right now is the stock lens and a 70-300mm Nikkor lens. I just looked up the port hole and yeaahhhhh I def need one of those lol.

I'm still trying to figure out shooting the reef tank with a DSLR as well. Doesn't the flash just bounce right off the glass? Your shots look great so it's clearly working.

He's probably not bouncing the flash on the glass he's taking top down picture through a port hole

Yep, no glass in the way. When I shoot from the side through the glass, I just use my iPhone with a red filter, no flash.

I'm looking at the pictures on the V6. Does the output come out at an angle? I have my return hard plumbed so that would be an issue. I don't use any flexible tubing. It seems odd that they wouldn't make it perfectly vertical. Is that adjustable?

The output is vertical, not at an angle.

What's actually interesting is that I just removed the volute (held on to the motor with three titanium screws) and unlike other pumps which let you rotate the volute for horizontal output, the way the volute is designed only allows for vertical output.

Ok, cool, it was pictures like this which had me worried:

In the picture, it does look like the output is angled 15 degree or so.

Yeah, and the person who posted the pics had to use a flexible tube to connect between the pump and hard plumbing. I'm hoping that's some sort of mistake or incorrect install and the output actually goes straight up.

Anyone able to take a pic of theirs installed from the side so I can see how exactly the output pipe looks? That's the last piece making me second guess it. That and a potential heat increase in the water over a dc pump, but I'm hoping that's negligible.

Thanks Will. I just read through your build thread today. Heck of a tank! Wish my wife would let me get one that big.

Thanks. Wife really liked the idea when we first moved. And really like the idea of a different focal point for a family room. Truth be told, today I'm not so sure she would agree anymore between the floods and how much time I spend on it.
