DIY 14G XXL, Extra Extra Long

Since the tank is pretty small I would say a fuge. It took me awhile to fiure out what the hole on the bottom of the sump wall was for. Now I know! LOL

that is awesome, i have a 33L and the tank you made rocks, a refugium that size would make a good breeding ground for isopods etc it would not be large enough to be a filter for the tank but you could use something like a tunze nano doc in the tank and you would be ready to go..... i am running both and it works pretty well, remember to clean the refugue sand.....

what are you going to light that with? I am using 2x54w t5 on mine

Thanks for the comments everyone... Mech, I don't think adding a tunze nano doc is going to happen since it cost just as much as we have in the tank and I don't have much of a budget left to work with... I've got a skimmer that will work in the space allowed, but not sure if the nutrient removal from the cheato is worth giving up a skimmer? My buddy will be doing regular water changes, and figure since it's only 14 gallons totally filled we should be okay to skip the skimmer, but looking for additional opinions.

For lighting I'm planning on using a pair of 36" VHO's...

Lighting sounds great...especially with such a long footprint. 2 36" VHO's will illuminate this tank wonderfuly.
Nice choice :)

As for the skimming...that is a touchy issue for many...i think that a skimmer is invaluable in any tank....even airdrivven skimmers...if you have the time...why not go to HD and get some pvc---fabricate an airstone skimmer and plop it in amogst the cheato?...just a thought..,.

the skimming power wouldnt be great...but it would exist...inexpensivly at that :)

BTW eric...your tanks always look amazing so im sure whatever you and your budy decide it will be a knockout. :)

Looks really good Eric ... you're work is always quality! I want this tank on my bed headboard/stand ... it's perfect size  Does your buddy know what fish he wants to keep? A school of green chromis would do a lot of swimming and keep that tank alive!

:lol2: Damn this is an excellent way to get someone reef crazed to do the dishes!

Thanks bro, not a bad idea... Now just fabricating it. :)

Thanks buddy, I'm not sure what his fish plans are as I think he's still up in the air on them, but last I checked 1 pygmy angel, a firefish, and a couple clown gobies... I figure putting it by the sink, doing water changes will be so simple the tank has to be a success. :) I'm gonna put a pair of 2.5 gallon buckets in the cabinets with hoses and valves so he can do tops off really quick, and do water changes just as fast. :D

Yea that positioning is really awesome for the kitchen itself because it doesn't take up any of the actualy kitchen space ... and the dosing should be a breeze.

You predicting any heat issues from the window, not sure of the weather in CO? If the VHO's are 36" I guess you'll have enough room for some PC fans even if... Honestly I can't foreshadow any problems but i'll keep an eye out for sure!

What filtration is powering this tank? I would skip the skimmer and try to go ALL bio with WC's. My skimmer has nothing to pull out these days!

I don't think there will be any heat issues, the window faces NW so only for a few hours a day in the summer time will the window have any sunlight on it, and the blinds will be closed from now on... I don't think we'll have too many heat issues, but like you said we will have room for fans if needed. I guess I need to get a thermometer in there to know for sure... (one more thing to get. :) ) The only filtration right now is the filter pad with carbon on the left side (mechanical and chemical) and the live rock for biological... I know it won't be much of a refugium, but I'm really leaning toward filling the right box with cheato and putting a light in the canopy over it. It can't be much smaller (relatively) than a AC HOB fuge on someone's 10g...

One other modification will be to build a small base to set the tank on, and to allow for an American DJ power management box to be installed so we can control everything better. Plus it will get the power cord out from between the tank and the wall. :D

your friend will love the american dj unit...they seem to look really neat on every system i have seen them installed on.

you could always fill the box with cheato and change your mind later(if necisary)

Yea I definitely agree, a base with some clean molding around it with and integrated DJ unit will make the space around the tank look professional.

As for filtration ... I underestimated even my tanks ability to just naturally filtrate itself. I think a simple fuge will do the trick ;)

Thanks guys, I think I'll just stuff the right side with Cheato and put in a additional light in the canopy. :)

Yes, the background will be added with the base and canopy. The ballast and bulbs came in yesterday, if my bro can find some time away from work we'll get it finished in a few hours. :)

Well, we got the canopy finished (other than the doors) and we can't build the base until the power management gets in. I'll take some new pics soon...

Make that canopy built, VHO lights installed and doors cut, just need to prime and paint the doors then install them. :) Pic's will be coming tonight... American DJ power management is ordered and should ship today, base contruction will begin this week.
