DIY Anemone

Thought I'd post some pics of the grow-out percs hosting in a DIY anemone I made. So they say that tank-raised clowns don't know what an anemone is, well they didn't tell my percs. They don't even care that it's not real. Anyhow, these were made with a stress ball cut in half and siliconed to some acrylic plates. It's really cool to watch them go from feeding at the surface to zipping back to the fake nem for protection. Hope you enjoy.

That's a fantastic batch, congratulations. Great idea with the stress ball. I think the reasoning on the TR and CB not taking to nems is after they are more mature and never having been introduced to one. You could be onto something there

Kevin,

You are having amazing success with the clowns. About how many have you got and at what stages? Is there one stage that you have more difficulty with than others?

Do they grow out the more white stripes with age or are these going to be oddly striped?

I have 50+ at 3months. The pic above is from 2hatches. I would say 120+ but it's hard to count when they get in such numbers. Those are 4week and 6weeks. I find there is no aggression if you combine the hatches from one month together.
The most diffcult phase as you would imagine is the larval stage. Once they go through metamorphosis they are almost bullet-proof. I've lost very few once past meta. I'm basically out of room for any more grow out tanks for now, but I would say I might be able to keep 3months worth of hatches going for now. I might expand, but that is only if it is warranted.
A.percula do grow into their stripes. the 3month old juvis all have at least some of the second stripe showing. Percs take much longer than occelaris to grow out. 6-12months vs. 4-6months for occelaris. I don't know at this stage whether the first batch will have mis-bars or not. It's still too early and I'm just learnig as I go. HTH

VERY NICE!!! You should wright a paper up on the whole experience and have it as a link on the COMAS website. I'm sure it would be interesting reading for anyone interested in raising them in the future. Also it would provide a link you could refer all the many questions you'll be getting about how to do it!

Keep the update pics coming and if you need any help in thinning the bunch out, you can put me on the list of wanting some of those guys.

I have some empty aquariums (15 and 25 gallon) if you wanna borrow one for grow out. I wanna keep one for QT but you can borrow the other.

Kevin, if you need help with raising any of the babies, I'd be more than willing to help. Whether it's taking so off your hands or helping raise them in my tanks. Whatever. I'm gonna try and breed clowns actually so this would be good training. Just an idea. Thanks!

I can do that for you... Well sort of... I asked the same question a while back. His basic answer was to buy this inexpensive book and follow all of the instructions that Joyce gives...

That's right bunzo.
Like I said before, I'm not doing something special outside what is lined out in the book. IMO all it takes is the commitment to time work involved with the larval stage. Get through that and you're pretty much on easy street IME.
