Well guys, I think one of the coolest and perhaps most useful DIY project is the Maxi Jet Tunze mod. This mod is simply great! Using this mod, you can turn a simple MJ900 which costs less than $20, into a pump capable of pushing 1500gph+. Dont ask me to prove it, others who actually cared to prove it did it. If you have ever seen one in action, you wont care about numbers anyway, they are amazing, AND DID I MENTION CHEAP??? Anyway I would be happy to get you guys all in the information you need on what to order ahead of time because obviously I will not be providing all the parts :P. However, we can plan this far enough out so you guys all have plenty of time to order your parts. This mod takes only a couple hours TOPS. It probably takes longer to tell you how to do it than it really takes to build. For reference talk to Benny :P. Needless to say his 29g now has quite sufficent flow, compliments of his single 1.25" prop MJ. Also as reference I have a prop that is 1.75" and will produce close to double that of the single 1.25" that he is using. Let me know guys!
 
I saw Bens today the flow was very good for something so small.

From what I felt from a distance on his powerhead I'd say it's 1/2 - 3/4 that of a Seio 820.
 
sound like a great Idea Horace. Been messing around with this mod myself lately too. We could probably do an assembly line and crank out a bunch of these mods for everybody.

yup - any maxijet will work.

doesn't really matter what size it is...from what i understand the only difference between maxijet models is the impeller size, which is what you are upgarding anyway.

Well I would have to disagree that its half to 3/4 the flow of the 820....I had them both in my tank at the same time and could feel them togeather and I can assure you the flow is as much or more than an 820 with a single nitro prop. When you put duel props on there its definatly more than an 820. If you put a 1.75" prop on there its much more than an 820...probably as much or more than a Sieo 1500. Believe it...dont believe it....If you read through the whole thread (40 pages?) you will get a better idea.

As for what MJs will work....Yes any will work, however the MJ400 and MJ600 have a different impeller style and it does require a bit of a different approach, but in the end its still pretty similar. The only issue with the 400 and 600 are they dont have quite as much power so they have a harder time with some of the better props. However, the 900 and 1200 are both big enough to spin the biggest prop (the 1.75" Dumas). Thus there is no benefit of using a 1200 over a 900...and the 1200 uses quite a bit more watts than the 900 so its pretty much a waste buying the 1200 just for this mod. I will post the list of stuff to order soon pending how much interest we get...I dont want everyone ordering stuff if there isnt enough interest.
 
If you need any help with the class, let me know. My two 1200 mods have been running for 2 months now. awesome is all I can say. I did lose two snails the got sucked in the side slots and made into escargo for the others, but the word spread quickly among the snails and I haven't lost one since the beginning. I also m working on a magnet mod to place these anywhere you want in your tank.
 
I couldn't feel the flow off his 900 from more than 15 inches or so away where the 820 at more than that distance I can still feel the flow.

When I added a single prop Nitro to my tank opposite of the 820, where the flow of the two powerheads met, it shot straight down in the middle of my tank and cleared the sand all the way to the glass. The middle of my tank is 24" from both power heads and the flow was so strong I had to remove the MJ mod until I could find a different way to run it without creating a sand storm. You have two 820s running in your 75 w/ no problems....If I was to try that with two MJ mods I would have so much sand flying that it would look like a blizzard in there. Granted your substrate is larger than mine, but I am here to tell ya that this mod is easily capable of putting out WAY more than the 820. Im not sure what you fealt but I can tell you when you compare them side by side, they are pretty darn similar, and note that is with a single prop. When you add a dual prop nitro, or the 1.75" dumas, its significantly more flow than you will get with the 820.....Wait until I finish my mod with the dumas.....I will show you :P. Im probably going to replace the 820 with that and have that as the sole PH in my tank.

Oh one more thing to point out....RV8TOR has a 200g+ tank and he still thinks the flow is awesome!

To confim this I demand someone bring a MJ mod over to my house and put it on the other end of my tank and compare the flow.
 
Wow, sounds neat. Horace if you want to begin setting up the DIY workshop be my guest. CIMA only has 2 more meeitngs until we break for summer vacation, however, so you may want to speed up the process or slow it down some ;)

to my knowledge no one has ever tried to organize a DIY workshop. everyone has the idea, but no one wants to put forth the effort :eek1:

something tells me horace is gonna buck that trend, tho ;)
