DIY MaxiJet Stream (Pic Intense)

Hi Robb,

Owch! LOL Not really!

Thanks, I understand what you are saying.

The mod that started this thread is a great idea.

I had made a very long response to your post but feel it isn't the right place for it on this thread.

Let me just say I agree with some that you said but not all of it. There is a lot more to this than has been taken into consideration.

And Robb you having a slow work day, better watch out maybe there won't be a paycheck because your boss is charging to much and only relying on uninformed customers!!!:)

im just wondering if anyone makes this mod in there home that they sell for a bit cheaper...im not tring to get in the middle, i just want one or two...i did make one but i dont like the way it looks..the only tool i had was a drill and a pair of dikes...lol.im not that skilled in DIY...hope me asking does not start anything...thz..best wishes to all your tanks...feel free to pm me or reply here...thz again....rich

okay just to clarify a little about my posts and then i am done... i dont want to negate the true intent of this thread... when i had first seen this thread and how the mod was done i had looked at it as a sensible fun project to do in place of buying a sometimes iffy seio pump(although i have a few as well as a couple of tunzestreams)... with as many tanks as i have up and running it seemed like a viable alternative giving me great "turbulent" flow as well as being able to set up the smaller mjs for my smaller tanks... i made a couple of the mods with my own tweaks and followed the thread to see others progress...then had the idea of having my neighbor machine out most of the parts...showed him what i was making along with what others had done and thats how he gave me the price...mind you that is for the work on the guard and the impeller with the parts added in...this would be him doing it on his spare time when he wasnt doing regular jobs( down time that he wouldnt be making any money anyways) he figured that he could take the long length of pipe and machine out the intake openings first and then the grove to lock it onto the mj and then cut the pipe into the individual guards...most of all this being automated...mind you im not a machinist so all im saying is what i was told...as for the impeller he said he would mill this and use the hobby props allowing them to slide over the added shaft so that it would balance easier...
as to being a businessman i have that history and knowledge also...may family owns a chain of restaurants and i have also done r&d on a product that some other investors and i worked on...so i know what it costs to do testing and molds and building prototypes...but as to this mod, a lot of the testing and r&d has been done already by most of the DIYers here...i in no means meant for my prior and current comments to be a bash on anyone or thing... phreefs product looks outstanding from the pictures...it just bothers me that like rburn said a mod done for the price of something that we are trying to get away from...i have no qualms about making moneyon something but i personally think that something like this should be priced for the hobbyist since it is obviously being made and sold by the hobbyist...just my $.02... im done

Lutz493 - by Jet turbine blueprint you mean like a ducted fan kind of apparatus? Or are you still using a boat prop type impeller?
Tim
I'd like to see the pics and may be interested in a couple...

Its an actual 7 blade Turbine.

I stopped by my local Hobbytown after looking at the thread and picked up a few boat props (2 blade) and wasn't satisfied and decided to make one from scratch.

I build desktop CnC machines so I was able cut the turbine out on the rotary Axis.

I've shut the shop down for a few days because of the past Holiday and this week I will do what I can to get some pictures up for people to see.

Hey Matt,

How much would you charge for making us the 7 blade turbine? I'm interested to see if this will increase the flow even more versus the double propeller design that I had.

Finally, version 2.1

Finally, version 2.1

Well, I got tired of dealing with the AquaClear MOD, and decided to go back to my MJ 1200 and see if I could pretty it up a bit.

Well, this is what I had before

Sure it was not the prettiest mod on the block, but it worked.

Now, version 2.1

And here are the parts (minus the MJ 1200)

The tools I used to complete this were:

Dremel with multiple bits
Table saw
Router
Drill and Tap Die for the screws

Overall, its performance is great, though I have no numbers to back it up. It definately throws water around quite a bit.

I would have had this up earlier today as version 2.0, but my lack of attention caused me to have to start over because when I finished it, I realized that when I had glued the locking bracket (PVC test cap) to the housing, I had glued it to the outlet side. Surprisingly, v-2.0 actually performed quite well with the intake slots on the front of the housing rather than near the actual MJ.

Black ABS pipe, 1 1/2" ID

I found that the ABS looks better than the stark white of the PVC, but cutting it was interesting. PVC melts when using a grinder attachment on a dremel. ABS melts too, but smokes a lot as well.

Mmmmmmmmmm... Plastic fumes....

Maybe that is what caused me to glue V2.0 backwards....

One thing that I have noticed is that my impeller assembley is making an intermittent vibration noise. It was doing this with my last mod as well, and since I am using the same impelles assembly, it is no surprise that it is doing it now as well.

Regardless, I attribute this to an unbalanced prop / impeller. I believe this as I can see an uneven wear pattern on the housing tube that the prop sits on and the impeller shaft goes through.

Does anyone have any ideas how to balance one of these so they rotate evenly?

Goto towerhobby.com and search for propeller balancer

I've gotten a pretty fair amount of PMs regarding my mod. So rather to PM you all back I will just post here.

I've placed an order for material - So it should be here around Friday......

I'm going into the shop this afternoon and should hope to have some visuals for everyone for later tonight or tomorrow when I can get them up.

When the material arrives I'll start working my way down the PM list so be patient please.
