DIY MaxiJet Stream (Pic Intense)

.098 carbon fiber rod can be nabbed at hobbytown usa. call before you go. I had two in my town, one carried, one didn't.

I can sell you guys some if you REALLY need it.

I don't think you have enough holes or perhaps the smaller ones need to be much larger. That alone might still not be enough.

Here's how I did mine

OK, I'll give that a try then. I'm still thinking about getting the 3 blade prop just for the shizu and giggles of it.

Question for dhnguyen:

In one of your post, I think page 13 or so. you made mention of making a stopper so that the blade starts up the right way. You noted the little black rod. Is that the small .098 carbo rod? Or something different.

Thanks!

That was a little piece of the carbon fiber rod. My design have chnaged a little since and the stopper is actually acrylic and is attached to the acrylic cross bar now.

Thanks for the hole idea. I increased the diameter on all the holes and its working now. I'm gonna have to remake the PVC housings so it'll be prettier. I'm thinking about trying out the 3 blade prop anyway. At this point I got the basics so tweaks are in order I feel. Thanks for the advice yall. Now I just need to let my fingers heal from all the PVC and Acrylic cuts i've endured from this project. One day I'll learn to use some gloves when drilling.

Acrylic sounds even better :D since I have plenty leftover from making baffles for my sump. Went to home depot today and wouldn't you know, out of the adapters

Any success stories with using MJ 1200s ?

yeah... The MJ1200 was too much for my puny 55g tank and that's why i opted for MJ400 instead.

The beauty with this mod is that they are all interchangeable between different MJ versions.

D.

quick question, is there any specific length that the plastic tubing has to be ( the part connecting the prop and the old impeller)

you've got to be kidding. one maxi jet 1200 was too much for a 55g???

i'm starting this mod tomorrow, i'll post pics of the work in progress.

well... Hold on there. I tried this with 2 MJ1200's on my 55 g (one on each end) and yes they were too much for the tank. Now I'm running 2 MJ400's instead which seem to be perfect for the 55g

still very impressive. i guess four of these on a 90g (one in each corner) wouldn't be too bad, or 8 on a 180g (two in each corner).

i need some help... i made one of these mods for a maxi-jet 600. im pretty sure i did everything right, but when went to test it, it wasnt working. the prop spins when its out of water, but when it goes under it just makes a kind of grinding or clicking noise, and hardly spins....its more like skippins or twitching. any ideas one what is wrong???

i wouldnt think so, i used the same propellor that was suggested. (aquacraft hammer). it didnt seem that it was just too hard for it to turn, it was acting like it just wasnt even trying to turn, the impellor and magnetic assembly was just jumpin around.

definitely sounds like one of the following:

1. Your impeller is off centered.
2. Your propeller is too big for the motor. How big (diameter) is the propeller?

3. You don't have sufficient water input. Not enough input holes or the holes are too small.

I am suspecting 3 here.

D.

1. even if it was off center, i took off the guide off the end and tried centering it manuall. still didnt work.
2. the prop is about 1" , its the same one the original supply list calls for.
3. i thought this could be it... but im not sure. would this cause the impellor to just kinda skip around? it doesnt seem like its struggling to spin, more like it doenst even want to try...i'll take some pics to show you, i dont think i can put more holes...
