Here are some pictures of the one I did (will be doing more) and have running.

From the Front.

The side.

And the Prop and how I adapted the MJ Ring. For the prop extention I used 3/16 carbon fiber rod, and for the shaft, 3/32 316ss welding rod.

As you have all said, this project is effective, cheap, and simple - therefore confirming my DIY handicapedness!

Well I'm actually not all that impressed with the latest rounds of pictured designs. **

Miracles of craftsmanship and design genius? - Yes.
Can a guy that gets glue all over his hands carry them off? - No.

In my opinion, things began to turn "Hollywood" with all this carbon shaft crap. Oh well, I suppose that's the way of the world. My ugly ducklings just keep chugging away. And because I used hot glue - I could fiddle around with getting everything straight and true while the little dabs of glue were still warm. Then slather it on to hold.

EDIT: Some of them that is. Others are clearly 'hill billy' enough for sticky fingered guys like me to be able to manage. :D

Pretty cool to see how diifferent people adapt the mod differently to make it work. I will try to put together a step by step guide with photos over the holidays if I get a chance.

Keep perfecting it guys.

Cheers,

D.

Good mod,
Only problem in my city we don't have hobby shops that carry the props. Where could I get the props for cheap? To Canada too.

LOL!!
We should have separate threads for those with decreasing amount of power tools. I'd like to see what the guys with a hacksaw and a cordless drill come up with. And if you really want to impress me with your design prowess, show me what the guysââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ brother can do with only a hacksaw and a cordless drill! Then weââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll acid test it with my brother. If he can build it, then even girls should be able to manage it.

"For those of you without a Knuth Supra 550 lathe, you can substitute . . ."

You know what's surprisingly hard to find in my town? Acrylic solvent. Gotta drive an hour north to buy it, pretty close to where I need to get my $1 (US) props to. Sure spending $10 in fuel to buy $1 worth of propeller makes sense! LOL! Seen what shipping it like these days?

(sigh) There used to be a day when a guy could work on his car with nothing but a screwdriver and a strobe light. No, I didn't screw up my parents car. That took my brothers friend who said "Replacing lifters is easy". Followed a long time later by "Uh oh". :eek1:

PS - This is all in fun. If anyone has taken offense, take a breath tell yourself: 'I am taking this way too seriously. Sure I blew like $40 on the powerhead disaster, but that guys parents dropped serious coin towing the car to a real mechanic to get running again.'

Something I noticed was that the tubes need alot of holes, else the impellor will really struggle to pull the water through.

Also I see alot of nozzles with the slits going perpendicular with the shaft.. is this better then horizontal? I Would assume that the water would flow in better if it was horizontal. (something i'll try when i redo the design).

Thanks I'll do that in the future.

The holes thing is correct, you want as little restriction on the input side of the water flow so you can get as much output as possible. As for the horizontal slits in the housing, I just think that is the easier method to cutting them. Vertical slits can be difficult with certian power tools.

On another note, I did manage to successfully complete my AquaClear 401 conversion. It is not currently completely reliable, but definately intense when it comes to output. The issue that I am having right now is that it won't properly start in the water, it just clicks back and forth. If I take it out of the water then place it in, it starts right up correctly. Since I have several of these power heads, I have some ideas that I need to impliment on the others to see if they work better.

I do find it comical that my first mod on my MJ 1200 was completely successful the first time out, but the AquaClears are a PITA!!! The only difference between them is that the ACs impeller shaft is not part of the impeller assembly. Other than that, they both spin both ways, they are both magnetic driven, and the housings are very similar.

Oh well..

:fish1::hammer:

In case anyone is interested, I found 1.5" test caps at Lowe's.
They look like they fit the MJ's perfectly and need only two notches cut out.

dhnguyen, are you still thinking about trying the perforated black material we discussed a page ago? I really wanted to see how that worked out.

Hey Marc,

No I haven't actually tried that out yet. Will probably see about ordering some soon though. Will keep ya posted.

I just got my carbon-fiber rods and the props I had ordered, so I need to get with it sooner than later....

One question on the reverse-spinning issue this mod introduces.

Has anyone tried both the "stoping-knob" and the "longer shaft" method to work around their MJs spining the 'wrong' way?

Which method would you recommend?

I don't know if this was talked about befor, but when using a propeller, has anyone worked the problem of the the pump spinning some times, in the opposite direction when switching on?
