DIY Rock workshop????

So have we come up with a gameplan with curing? Are we gonna take wiszmaster up with his river curing technique or are we just gonna do kidie pools with freshwater changes? If that is the case, I will be willing to bring a batch back to my house if we are going for the home curing plan.

As far as the workshop goes, cureing and kuring are going to have to be up to the individual. I have some cardbaord that everyone can place thier rock on for transport home. If a rock is too big or unstable I can keep them while they cure for some time.

When it comes time for water kuring, then that will be up to each person to work out. If I had a pool we would be in luck, but I don't. :(

Bryan, that is probally a better idea. I wasn't trying to place the duty of curing on you. My bad for my previous comment. I however, think I am going to invest in a kiddie pool and then throw it in the back of my work truck.

Have you decided which weekend for sure and if you want to split up the materials or woudl you like the cash? Everyone have a good weekend. Chris...

ok guys, Change of plan.

Talking to everyone at the meeting yesterday it seemed there may be some others interested. The idea of Easter weekend was a bad one, my wife has given me a dirty look, it is spring break. SO, with that being said, it looks like we need to change the date yet again.

So now we are looking at April 14 or April 21. The 14th may not be good because it may interfear with the next club meeting.

So that has us looking at the 21st as the next real oppertunity.

Ifg we do it at my place, I will have some ability to store rock for that firat week of curing iun my garage, but I am not sure how long my wife will want to give up her parking spot for a buch of reef geeks rocks. So anyone one that needs to leave it before it is stable enough to transport can, but I will need to break it out of any molds and such within a week.

I was thinking that if you are not interested in real large rock, you can use a 5 gallon bucket for your "mold box" and that would aloow you to make several rocks opne on top of the other, and easily take them home. For the guys that are looking to make larger pieces, we try and find milk crates for molds, or something like that, again transportable.

Any way. this is going to be a doable project, but if we really want this to be a good sized group, we are going tohave to wait a bit to get the project off the gound.

Greg, I am really interested in getting the oystershells you were talking about. They would be great in the rock. I will shoot you a PM and we can figure something out, maybe there is place up closer to Pasco that has some for sale too.

I am off to the zoo, I will post later and start a materials list.

Bryan,

The shell is $25 a yard and just around the corner from me so its on the way and I got the truck its just to easy. Just let me know how much we will need.

Guys and gals interested in this, here is a tip. Its Easter time and you know what that means......you have those plastic eggs all over the place. They make great forms for plugs, so don't throw them out and after Easter you can pick some up for real cheap. I especially like them for zoas, the dome makes for a real nice look when it is fully encrusted.

I may have a problem. Just got an email for our kids in La. They may be coming with our ONE and ONLY grandson that weekend. I'll get further details. I think it will be ok if it's afternoon.

I am good for either weekend, the 14th or 21st. As for mold boxes, what about getting cardboard boxes from Publix. Short and flat boxes would be ideal, like strawberry flat boxes. And since you have to use sand, you could place newspaper on the bottom, then sand then your molds. I am not sure if the 5 gallon buckets will be good for the molding process... how will the rocks no get smashed and dry if they are on the bottom?

Just a thought. Plus the boxes will make it easy for everyone to take home and then they can be tossed in the trash when they are all used up.

As for frag molds, I think the egg shells will work great. I had another idea, what about an egg carton?

I have used the cartons too and they work well, so do the plastic flats that candy or those little muffins or pastries come on.

I haven't done that but I like the idea. I may try it the next time I set up a tank.

Boydx- when I make the live rock, I will drill little holes all over and do the same. I think it is a great idea. Is this the first time you have seen that website? They have great videos, cool tank profiles, and pretty good video feeds.

Have we made any updates on a workshop? The weekend of April 13th I have to go try wedding cakes, so I will be out of town. How does the following weekend sound- April 20th?
