diy seaswirl

mind to post pic of yours, especialy close to the plumbing section that you mentioned. Thanks.
I'll try to get you some pics later today, the lights are off on my tank right now, so would be hard to see. It's the part where the o-ring section fits down insdie the other section that I'm talking about. You just wanna make sure these don't come apart.

Does this look like the right motor from Mcmaster-carr? Or at least the right page. I was thinking of going with one that has more torque to help the motor along. Since you said 3rpm was almost a little fast i was thinking of either the 2.5rpm or even the 1.5rpm motor. I do plan on doing 4 eventually so I was thinking maybe getting a few different ones to mix it up in the tank more. Any thoughts or advice on them?

Yes, that's the right one and yes I think a mixture would work great. I'm really liking the torque rating on that 1 rpm motor. I'm still going to build one for the other end of my tank, but probably going to wait just a bit. I just got a great deal on a 150, so probably going to be transferring everything over to a 150 very soon.

Good, I'm on the right track. A 150 is going to be a nice size tank. What are you in now? I just got my 48x36x24 built custom(180g) not too long ago. still getting the other pieces together before I put it all up. I'm stuck in my 75g for now though. These four units will go in the top corners of the tank and help to make random flow with an oceans motions coming through the bottom of the tank. should make for some great random "real reef" flow I hope.

Yeah, sounds like a good plan. I've got a 110 right now, so not really a big upgrade but the tank is RR and I'm using HOB overflow and closed loop so it's just a nicer tank.

After all, I felt it would be safe if it is a DC motor. What if the O ring broke???
I think I'd have a big mess, LOL. But would be with a DC motor also. Probably a little safer overall, but if that o-ring breaks I think the electricity in that motor is probably going to be one of the least concerns.

GFCI???
what happens if a powerhead shorts out in your tank?

Well I wasn't at home when it happened as it was the day I was returning from a Mexico vacation. A friend was house sitting and went down that morning and there was black smoke coming out of the tank. He pulled the plug but all the fish were dead. The corals were not great, but all survived. He did save my Purple Tang by moving it through the water with his hand until it started to revive. But like I said, all the fish were dead.

Sorry, I don't intend hijacking this thread. It is most interesting. Please carry on. I would like to try this also.

Yeah, I did, and it was preventable. I had bought three Rio 2100 pumps. Two of them went on the fritz and were taken out before anything happened. The third should have been taken out at that time. Looking back at it now, it was just a matter of time before the third one went....and it did as I described earlier. I can't tell you exactly what happened to all three of them, just that it did.

The first thing come in mind is the worm gear set. This way we could mount the motor and the gear out side the box. The box has the open bottom, so if the leak happened, the water will down flow. ;-) This becomes a very expensive experience...

Thought I'd do 1 more update to show how the motor is holding up. It's been 1 month today since I put in the new motor. So far, so good. I probably won't do any more updates unless the motor fails, so hopefully won't be doing any for a long time. Anyway, here's a quick vid for anyone that's interested:

The coolest DIY thread ever! How is your livestock responding and are you getting the kind of flow you hoped for?

lake - The way I did the plumbing on it holds mine together. The OP discussed this earlier in the thread though also.

jbird - I'm definitely getting the flow I hoped for, and my livestock really seem to love it. It really seems to help keep my live rock clean.

Where can I get this box? Do you have a link or a part#?
