This might be an obvious DIY, but here goes.
Over the weekend I purchased an automatic LED nightlight from homedepot (5 bucks). I brought it home, cracked it open and soldered a longer lead to the LED. I put the LED up in my lighting assembly and put the plugin in a place that could "see" my lights but not the "moon light".
My tank is the "in the wall variety" so I don't have a hood or anything to complicate this but I am guessing this project would be easy to adapt. The photovolactic cell can be moved in the same manor as the LED.
