diy skimmer

I got this skimmer from a friend, who got it from someone who did a diy, wondering if this setup would work I got it for free pretty much and I'm wondering if anyone can see any flaws in it?

I've seen all sorts of skimmers but none that really look like this and was wondering if this type of setup would actually work.


also silly question, which is intake and which is exhaust?

INput is where the venturi is located with the airline. Output is the ball valve.

It should work, don't know how well, but it should work. You will want a decent pump to put the water into the venturi (as dattack said the section with the airline), start out with the ball valve completely open and then slowly close it until you have the water level where you want it.

oh okies, any recommendations on a pump? I have a mag 5 for the return but I've read these get really warm so I'm slightly worried about the heat factor with that, should I choose a smaller pump?

i would replace the ball valve with a gate valve,it will be easy to fine tun it. also what size is the tube? it looks like a mag 5 might work. on a skimmer that size i would use a needle wheel pump for more micro bubbles.
