DIY stand failed attempt

I strongly agree that most every stand I've seen built from dimensional lumber is ridiculously over built. I think the issue that causes "surprise" failures is not failure of the structure to support the tank. Rather it is failure of the tank due to non-uniform support from the stand (not level, flat, or square). The concentrated local loads often cause gradual seal failure or catastrophic cracking of the glass.

Thats true. Failures I have seen typically have been a broken tank, not a pile of wood with a tank sitting on top of the rubble.

Well, unless a tornado blows through, and the tank winds up down the street, around the corner, and up in a tree...

I keep telling folks that a plywood box is going to do the job more than well, but seems they don't want to hear it... :) Less hassle, screws and glue and your done...
