DIY Stand Height

Is 42" tall by 24" wide going to be too top heavy for a 150 gallon tank? I built a stand for a 30 gallon and we made it 30" by 13" and it was top heavy. I do not want the same thing to happen to this stand. Please let me know before I start building.

Thanks,
Josh

42" is pretty tall, most working surfaces are at 36", and if you wanted it to be more stable you could make the stand large than the tank so that you had a little ledge all the way around

That's pretty freakin tall!

I just changed the stand for my 55 from 28" to 34" and it's was very noticable! I would really be careful with those heights. I would recommend that you make the stand as long and wide as you can, and then consider adding weight/ballast to the inside to help stability.

I have a 55G sump inside my stand, at floor level. It made a very noticable difference in stability.

I need to be able to play my 35" tall skimmer inside the stand. As it is the stand does have a about 2 inches around the entire thing that the tank doesn't sit on.

ok ... now i am worried... i just built a 42" stand for my 6' 125. should i be worried about it tipping since its so tall? Should i brace it to the studs on the wall? I still have not put the tank on it. Please advice. remember that my stand is 6 feet long, 42" tall and 22" wide.

I have a 135 with a 36" stand going to a 42" if I ever get time to finish it. I have it secured with 2 screws to the wall. It was never "tipsy" without the screws, but with extra traffic in the house I wanted to be sure.

This is what someone had to say about it on reefcentral.

"i wouldnt think so. i have a 90 on a 42" stand with no problems. i think you are going to have enough weight to keep it stable. actually i also had a 135 on a 42" stand with no problems too.
small tanks dont have enought weight to hold themselves down real well in my experience. i have a nano that is plain wobbly."

This guy build stands too by the way.

I built my Stand for my 220 . It is 42" tall. Built it strong and steady and you should not have a problem. (Just no stampeads in the house)
