I am planing on building a stand for my 55g tank. I was wondering if I follow RocketEngineer's plans can I build my stand big enough to some time hold a 75g or 90g tank or should the stand be 55g specific?
I built mine a little bigger so I had a shelf. My guess is it's not recommended as the bigger it gets the weight is not exactly distributed over the vertical legs which are the key to the design, but I think you can get away with it with a 55. That's what mine is and it was built about 4" wider than a standard 55 depth, no problems for 4 years. I would use a think plywood top ~3/4"
the stand I build for my 56 gallon, I put a tank on it that has a foot print of 22x47 so of course, just need to make sure your tank now will sit on some supports is all
Build it for a 90 and your 55 will be fine, just use 3/4 plywood top with a lengthwise brace that will support the back of the tank, to distribute the weight. make sure your tank dimensions are all over 2x4's.
Thank you for the responses. So if I build it for a 90g, I should put an extra 2x4 along the length of the back for support? I did plan on putting plywood on the top of the stand to support the bottom of the tank more.
