DIY Sulfur Denitrator

Is anyone using an ORP probe to monitor their reactors. It seems like such an easier solution compared to monitoring effluent drip levels, No2/No3 levels, etc

Thanks

Thank you

Thank you

DJ just a quick message to say THANK YOU
I am going to try this here in Ireland after paddys day of course.I read some were earlier in the thread that this is/was thread of the month. It,s the best diy thread for fishkeepers i have ever read.
By the way can i paint a shamrock on it and call it DJ CICH DENITRATOR
just for your irish branch

Nitrates are between 50-75 on my tank.. so we shall see how this works...
Nice work. Did you cut a grove for the o-ring?

nope...there is not much pressure.. so it didnt really need one... and it seals very well this way.. i have done a few projects and they all work fine.....

Welcome Abroad

Still waiting for mine to cycle. Nitrites and Nitrates continue to be off the scale and I'm starting to wonder...

Any updates to this?

I believe Carlos from njreefers is using one. There is a modification to the connector or wire that has to be made by reversing polarity.

Yep, no changes. The thing is still a nitrite/nitrate factory.
I lost track of time a bit, but I think it's been cycling just over two weeks now.

I don't remember seeing any pics of your setup....Please post some pics and any relevant info that may help troubleshoot the issues.

A Nitrite/Nitrate Factory !!

A Nitrite/Nitrate Factory !!

siskiou....

Yes this can very trying to say the least:mad2: :mad2: . As i recall your unit has up and runing since 03/02, right?.. I think you posted on 03/05 that a result of Nitrate test was 35ppm, a question here, what test kit are you using?, I ask because the common ones used here like the Salifert, API, or LaMotte don't have a scale or reading for "35ppm". If not does you kit read total Nitrates or Nitrate-Nitrogen???

Most folks here (not me :( :( ) have had a "fairly fast cycle" with Nitrates down where yours are like 3 to 8 days, where (ya I know you know)) your going into your 15 day or so.....as dj asked please post your pics on this setup as we all can gain by sharing our experinces with this method.

Here's one.
Anything else in particular I should take a closer shot of?
Thanks for trying to help me figure things out!
Basically, I followed the instructions how to build it to the letter, apart from the different lid.
Inside, there is a sponge (the eheim blue coarse type), half a gallon of LSM sulphur media, some Matrix media, another sponge, since the Matrix was floating.
I'm feeding it with a small pump, and had to switch the input/output, since the MJ 1200 has so much pressure where the original input is, that the pump had no chance getting any water in.

Original parameters were 0 Nitrites and about 35 Nitrates, output of the reactor is off the scale for both with Quickdip test strips I got for checking on the progress. Numbers were double checked by LFS with Salifert test.

Question guys. Guy on ebay selling sulfur powder pellets ,tech grade, cheap. Can this stuff be used or will it break down in water column? Maybe stupid question but I was curious. Thanks

I've been using one I got from the big auction site. The guy that sells them is super. Helps a lot. I could never get my 250 gal below 20 for nitrates. Now it seems to be working great. I had some problems trying to get it dialed in but the seller/builder of the denitrator has helped. It is a gravity fed system. I had it running really slow for a while and started to get the egg smell. I increased flow and eventually he sent me more bacteria to put in and start it over. I think that did the trick. My wife says she still can smell the sulfer. I'm not sure. Anyone else have one up and running and still think they can detect some smell?

siskiou,

Am I missing something??? I don't a control valve on your line(s) or are they hidden some how? If not how are you controlling the flow rate thu it (drops/sec)

It's there, at the end of the output line inside the bucket. Not visible in the pic.

Results update:

My reactor 6"x15" eheim 1250, 1/2 filled with LSM 1/4 filled with ARM.

I put it in an 18 gallon rubbermaid tote with 5 gallons of tank water.
Starting NO3 25ppm
1st day 25ppm
2nd day 50ppm
3rd day 0ppm! :D

Installed on tank(25ppm) 1 drip per second
after 3 days
Effulent NO3 0ppm
Tank NO3 10ppm
Calc 460
Dkh 8 (down from 9)
PH 8 down from 8.2

I mixed up some of Randy's alk(baking soda) and started dosing in addition to the ESV I dose everyday and got the alk and ph back to where I want them. Over time I'll find out how much alk I'll need to dose to keep it in balance.

No sulfur smell as of yet :D :D TG, the wife wasnt having that!

Thanks for a great thread djfrankie
