DIY Surface skimming

So one night I decided to look at my tank fron the bottom up and just look and I see a thin layer of almost oily film on the top of the water. I relize after doing some resurch that you can skim the top of the water. Now this is what I thought I bought the skimmer for but it a CPR bakpak and the power head for it is submerged and does not get the top of the water. So to make this story shorter here is a pic Please give me feed back

Most (all?) of us use some type of surface skimming device (also called an overflow). I'm not sure what your device is. Ideally you'd want to construct a surface skimming overflow box around the intake of the Maxijet, right?

That is sort of what this does it pulls the water down into the top of the device and has a mesh to pas through so that nothing goes inside. I am still confused on the overflow box but learning.

Think about a swimming pool. They use the same type of surface skimming device to draw floating oils and bugs into the pool filter.
We all have surface skimming devices on our reef aquariums....

yes I used on on a bakpak made a hugh dif for 20 dollars

If TRS doesn't have one, I've seem them at CF too.

If all else fails, you can make your own. The problem with your current design is that it doesn't have enough area for the overflow & it dramatically restricts the intake to your pump. You never want to restrict pump intakes as it puts a lot of wear and tear on the pump.
