DIY Wavebox Tutorial from start to finish!

my tank is 48" but shallow and I use a 6055 I get a 1" wave, but with a 90 being deeper I would use atleast a 6100/01 a 6200 if you can get one as that is what the original wavebox pump is as I understand it.

i know it has been asked at least once...maybe more...but is there any concers about this placing undue stress on tank seams &/or stand load bearings????

i am in the process of doing custom-built tank of about 50-60 gallons & would like to do one of these...not sure if i want to use the wavebox or do it w/out

could you set a grate in the box above the tunze and place media bags in it to run cleansed water in the tank, it would not be hard to build and i think the water will still fill in the box at the right amount.

controller trouble shooting

controller trouble shooting

Awesome thread and a great project to build.

I just finished building this controller. I can vary the run time of the pump, but the off time is always 20 seconds? Anyone know what the problem could be?

Also, what wattage led are you guys using?

I will post pictures when it is finished.....again.

thanks

James, I have heard that if you have a glass tank that you don't want to run a wave box as it puts undue stress on the seams, over time. I do know people who are running them on glass tanks and have not had issues. As for rocking if the stand is well built and doesn't move, you should have no issues.

I don't think I would personally put a wave box on a 50 gallon tank, too small. I would, however, put a pump or two on a time and run them that way.

LED flashing and 20 second delay solved. had a 1OHM instead of a 10K resistor. Bought it in indivual resistor bin. store had the bin mislabeled. :)

Maybe someone can help me. I'm thinking of using a Tunze 6301 (7925 GPH) on a DIY wavebox. I realize that I should increase the size of the box because more water will be output. My tank is 9 ft long and 420 Gal. Does the frequency of the waves decrease as the tank gets longer ? I ask because the diameter of the hole to allow water back in is the same as a Tunze 6201 (5283 GPH) so it would need a longer time between waves to allow the box to refill. Am I correct and does anyone know the answer? Or has anyone used a standard wavebox on a large tank ?

Riverman, you are correct. The time the wave takes to get back to the starting side of the wave will be longer with a longer tank. I have heard that 8' tanks take about 2 seconds for the wave to return.

So if it takes 2 seconds between waves maybe I don't need the faster (6301) pump but just need a larger box to move more water in a larger tank, does this make sense ?

I asked this in another thread... but I'll ask here too:

so instead of the DIY controller or 6091 controller, can't I just use an aquasurf ran by an AC3?? the aquasurf is able to make the pump go from 0% to 100% in any time interval.... just gotta set it through the AC3. Will this controller work??

Clicking Noise

Clicking Noise

I have this DIY controller on the Tunze 6100. Every time the pump turn on, it make a clicking noise. Is there a way to prevent this clicking noise?

Just spent all morning reading this entire thread. GREAT thread and justifiably won ThreadOTM.
This got me all hyped up to give it a try until the question of stress on the tank seams entered the picture and seamed (pun intended) to go unanswered. I'm sure it went unanswered simply because there probably hasn't been any kind of study done to say what the answer really is "for sure".

You would think if there is a "known" concern in this area that Tunze would market their WB's "For Use With Acrylic Tanks Only", which they do not.

Until such time that proper stress studies have been done I guess this is just another "Mod At Your Own Risk" project.

i've just done one of these controllers for my 6055 nanostream and it works a treat in my 60ltr nano, have to run on the 12v setting to keep the wave down to an inch but i love it!

as to the stress on the glass im sure we are only going to take a year or two off it and will replace due to scratches etc before then ayway!

for those who are really concerned just brace your corners or add another bead of silicone to add strength.....you can get fish safe silicone to be used in-situ now!

this mod has saved me well over 100 pounds so i can get on with the next DIY of led reef lighting!
