Do Clams Have A Life Expectancy?

I purchased a Maxima clam last weekend for a buddy of mine which was supposedly 59 yrs old??? It was big for a Maxima almost 12 inches long.

I was wondering if clams have a life expectancy and if so how long?

Giant clams can live over 200 years. A giant clam holds the record for longest lived animal known, in fact (about 250 years).

actually some species of tutles do not have a life expectancy and never die of old age. They die from disease or other critters.

We already know the thread is about a clam. Not all things we think are "alive" has a life expectancy the way we think of lifespan (in terms of timeframe). Lots of life forms have life cycles that are driven by other factors (such as nutrients)

Just out of curiosity, where did the age of 59 years come from? Has it been in captivity that long?

so what is the difference between life expectancy vs lifespan? aren't they basically inter-related?

Well, the LFS I bought the Maxima at said the clam came directly from an exporter in Thailand and that it was aprox 59 years old. I know Maximas tend to grow slower than squamosa's, gigas and derasas. Also crocea's tend to grow much slower too. Anyhow, I have no idea what a 59 year old maxima should look like size wise but I beleive that the clam came from thailand. They told me it was their first time working with this guy and judging by the clam shipment they had I think they were impressed as I was...
