noticed my crocea wasn't extending today and was wondering if they do that on occasion? all perameters look good and my deresa seems ok. any advice?

You know those little star fish that appear out of the live rock? THOSE LITTLE SONS OF $%^%'s ATE MY CROCEA!!!!

I wouldnt count on that for sure yet, they intantly go to things dead and have seen reports of various clean up crew members eating clams that are very stressed and damaged.

Thing is, this clam was really healthy and vibrantly colored. He only looked bad yesterday and today it was laying on it's side on the sand with the little stars inside. I have a sand sifting star which i hear will eat clams also. I'm so broken hearted. Plus i'm now worried about my Deresa.

i agree, likely just cleaning up the mess. though depending on species the larger star may have played a role in the clams demise.

what fish / inverts do you have??

My inverts are blue leg hermits and cleaner shrimp. I've got a Coral beauty but have never seen it go by the clam or touch any corals at all. The rest of the fish are:
Vlamangi Tang, Sailfin Tang, Kole Tang, Powder Blue Tang, Pink Tail Trigger, Blue Jaw Trigger, Green Manderin,Scotter Blenny,Fire Gobys,Fox Face,Clown Fish,Square spot Anthias,Pj Cardinals, Orbiculate Cardinal, Sand sifting Goby,Serpintine & Sand Sifting Starfish, Long nosed Hawk, Green Chromis,Blue Damsels, Cleaner Wrasse.

i would keep an eye on the fish ( CB, tangs and triggers) to see if they show any interest in the derasa. if the derasa starts retracting his mantle too, try covering the clam with a clear container ( pop bottle if large enough ) with some holes for flow. this usually shows wheteher he is being harassed or not.

good luck
