Do clams loose their color as they grow larger?

I have a small 2 inch maxima. Its currently very colorful. I had an LFS tell me that they loose their color/vibrancy as it will grow larger. Is this true?

Loss of color is due to loss of health. They probably do not change there bulbs enough. I had one that was about 2 inches and now 5 inches and just as colorful.
