i know this is a weird question, the the lights go out and give it some time i come to see the fish and both of my clown fish are on top just swimming. i never seem to see them come to the bottom. Is this normal?

Are these clowns new? It is normal for them to sleep at the surface when they are new to the tank. If they are bobbing up and down, laying on their side in an anemone (this is a clownfish sleeping.) I've had one clown sleep upside down on a filter return pipe before..I tell ya, that scared me but thats what made her feel safe.

you can tell the diff between a sleeping clown and non-sleeping. When they sleep their swimming becomes very rhythmic. Quite interesting to see, although they still seem to have some consciousness and awareness of their surroundings.

My B/w Occ. 'sleeps' right on top of my return. She even chases others away from it. Its her 'spot'. IME they dont always 'lay down' but often just sorta hover in a spot that has the right flow and right security for sleeping!

i've had my clowns for about 4-5 months. their swimming does seem a bit rhythmic, but when i get close to the tank they move around alot. weird little things but awesome!

Do you sleep? ;)
When my Ocellaris used sleep, they retreat into the corner of my tank and started swimming in such a fashion that kept them in one place in the water column. It was very "rhythmic" as someone above mentioned. But now that my torch coral hosts them, whenever they sleep, that are tucked into the tentacles facing a whole bunch of different directions!

I have seen my female ocellaris actually slide out of her lta and land nose first in the sand that was funny

mine burry themselves deep in the elegance and you just cant find them... sometimes the flow moves the tenticles just right and you can see a tail sticking out

When I first got mine, it swam constantly like it was on meth. It's seeming to calm down a bit now. It likes the front corner near the sandbed for some reason. One of the more interesting things in the tank.

My pair of GSMs sleep on top of each other. When I look at them, I think that they are dead, but I guess that they see me and start to move. It is funny too, because once the lights go on, they are on opposite sides of the tank and the female scares the other one occasionally. But once the lights go out, they are right next to each other, snuggling. ;)

Typical women only want men around when it can benefit them... :rolleye1:

Hahah funny stories...

I just picked up 2 GSM's yesterday and this morning with lights out, I wanted to make sure they made it the night.

Both were at the top of the water level, but on other sides of the tank from each other. One looked like it was swimming in place, the other was on its side swimming...I for SURE thought the side-swimmer was a goner, but fortunately, when I went home for lunch, both were swimming around like normal...

Glad to hear this side-swimming is normal ;)
