Do I need a Herbie Setup?

I have a 90 gallon marine land
Reef ready tank with a factory
Overflow box and I single 1"
Drain and 1" return... The hole
Is actually 1-3/4

Not sure what kinda pump but I'm
Thinking 900gph rated.

Will put a ball valve on return pump..

Saw many herbie set ups where they use
The drain and return as 2 drains then
Run a return up the back..
Advice please

You will need a herbie to get any kind of flow. a durso will get very noisy at 300+ GPH a herbie you can run well over a thousand GPH.

So you "can" do it either way, but I'd never recommend not doing a herbie or BA setup.

Drain will I need another Durso?
Or can I just use a regular stand pipe ?
How would you guys do it?

Suggest you hunt down the herbie thread. One of the two drains is set up to function as a full siphon (top of stand pipe fully submerged so it doesn't stuck air) attenuated with a gate valve; the second is an open channel stand pipe that only operates if the siphon gets blocked.

And a gate valve on the fully submerged pipe
To regulate flow.. I guess I'd better have a pretty powerful
Pump on the return and I just need to
Find a way to run the PVC up the back
Where it's not visible and ugly pipe showing

FWIW I run a marineland 90 with the same drain configuration, and I ended up running my siphon with 3/4" pipe and the open channel with the standard marineland durso (1" pipe out of the bulkhead expanding to 1 1/2' or maybe 1 1/4 cannot recall). I actually used a ball valve to control the siphon flow, and am using a panworld 40 pump that pushes about 400 gph, more than enough for a 90. You don't really want to run the siphon full out because in the unlikely event it were to get fully plugged, the open channel wouldn't be able to handle all the flow.

Why would Marineland only make a single
Drain and single return if it is not optimal
Flow? Is it a cost thing ?
Obviously they think it's fine to run
A single drain and single return on a 90

It's a mass market tank, with mass-market features. Herbie drain, while not complicated, is more advanced stuff.
