Is the pump on the 29 bio cube sufficient ( I think flow is 310 gph) or do I add additional flow, or do I replace the stock pump. And if so, what size do I need?
The very first Biocube ever made has the stock pump and is a very nice little reef. I see it almost daily at work. It has everything exactly stock without any mods and has been running since May. So you probably do not have to replace the pump if you don't want to. On another note, you may want to increase the turbulence which you can do by adding a second pump in the main tank itself (like a Maxijet 900 or 1200) for additional turbulence. Another option and one of the best mods you can make for the Biocubes is the addition of the Hydor flow which rotates the output around and creates a lot of turbulence. It attaches to the filter output of the Biocube nicely. The only complaint I have seen from others is they do not appear very reliable in the long term and are prone to failure when they become clogged or jammed. But they are not that expensive and the function is unique. Mine is still running well but it's only been running for 3 months now.
I swapped the return pump for a MJ1200 with a Hydor Flo and added a Nanostream in the lower right corner aiming up. The flow is perfect! As far as the cord, there are notches in the top so you can run your cord out with the top still sitting flush.
