DSBs are typically 4+ inches I would use the RC Sand Bed calculator to figure out the rest here is a link. Hope this helps.

I don't rinse the dry sand. All those fine sand particles help with sand bed and won't cause any kind of cycle. They will cause a bit of cloudy water when you add the sand, but it doesn't hurt anything other than your ability to see through the water for a couple of days

better safe than sorry.. i would like to see someone experiment with kitty litter for any purpose in a reef tank just seems strange to me..


i would go with the Dr fos&smith order and get a good fine particle ( more surface area for the RDSB so you can yield more de nitrate bacteria)

Why not use silica sand? Quikrete commercial grade fine is $3.50/50lbs.
