Do I need sponges?

I have a 12g jbj nano cube DX and in the first rear chamber it has 3 sponges. Do I really need those? Should I keep them all, none, or some of them?

I threw all of mine away.

If you clean them properly and often they are a good addition to your filtration system IME. IF your not into tank maintence, then toss them for sure.
