I got this tank used and it was previously setup. As I was cleaning the glass I noticed this little chip on the inside. As you can see it has spided slightly. Is there anything I need to do so it wont spider like a chip on the windshield of a car would? Has this chip threatened the integrity of my tank? I don't think there is anything to worry about, but better safe than sorry. The chip is about 2mm in diamiter and about 1mm deep in the glass. Here are a couple photos:

edit** BTW the tank is a AGA 120gal

I also wouldnt risk it. Notthing worse then looseing your live stock and flooding the room. Think about the damages. Thats a hell of alot of water all over. Best off youll be is it starts to crack more and you have to tear down the tank to change it out. Might as well do it now why you have a chance. How much would another used tank be?

more than I could afford.....I was thinking in a worst case senerio i would tear down what I got and use a glue that cures by UV or something.....anyone know of such a thing?

Try calling an auto glass repair store. They'd probably be able to give you a good answer. It would still be risky though. Brand new, I think AGA 120 is like $150-$175.

I had some scratches that I thought about removing, but never felt like emptying the tank. If you can't feel it when you run your fingers over it, then this won't work, but I thought I'd throw it out there. This is the article I found: http://www.bostonaquariumsociety.org/html/faqs/scratches.htm

is it a chip? or is a crack? usually chips wont spidey more, but it can turn into a crack depending on how deep the chip is....

It is a chip.....you can feel it as a divit on the insude....i am mostly worried about it turning into a crack or spidering more.....it is about 1mm deep based on visually looking at it....if it were to crack would it be slow or overnight?

as for calling glass places I did....they basicly said glass like that can not be repaired. They said I could epoxy another peice of glass over it on the inside and it would be 100%, but that would not look very nice. I am going to call AGA on monday and see if they can't give me some more insight.

I would just save some cash and get a new tank. You dont want water all over the house do you? Good Luck!

glue the the glass on and turn the tank around so it is in the back

I thought about that but it is drilled.... :-/

If the tank is not tempered then it is a lot less likely to run. I have a tank that my wife hit with a water hose that she was suppose to be holding in another tank and it completely cracked in 10 directions. I drained the tank, siliconed the heck out of the crack, and haven't had any problems using it. That was a year ago. Maybe I'm just lucky. Personally, I'd slap some silicone on it and just keep an eye on it.

What's $200-$300 when you're attempting a salt water 120g tank? Regardless of whether you go w/ a sump or good lighting, maintenance is going to be very expensive!

The tanks not setup right? ITs like now your chance to change it. Many people that have that problem have the tank full of life and water and have no way to change it or fix it before its too late. It might work for life and im syaign it wont but a 120 gallon is a big tank with alot of money invested into it. I can honstly say that the tank its self is going to be one of the cheapest pieces of equipment youll buy. 1-3 pieces of sps or fish will cost more then it will to replace the tank. Not worth the risk of keeping you awake at night.

i am not really worried about it breaking.....the photo makes it look larger and worse than it is....i am worried about it just spidering out and looking ****ty. And then needing replaced. The tank is half way setup. It has LR and a couple corals in it and a tang. But it can be taken down if thats what you guys think it needs. Which is sorta what it sounds like. I am going to call AGA and see what they say just as a last bit of input though.

I would not use the tank.
I wouldnt be able to sleep if my tank had a chip in it.
It is not worth losing everything.

As stated above a new tank will only run you about $300.
A 120gl, setup with all the right componets will run you close to $3600 or more, So the cost of a tank is nothing compared to the other costs.
