anyone else have ideas..... :-/

Looked for the thread on RC but no luck yet but do you have any local glass stores? They may have the equipment to check it for you. There are meters and special polarized lenses that allow you to check to see if it is but have not found the thread yet.
A glass store would be your safest bet to check. Tempered glass will shatter into a million pieces and make a mess you dont want as well as a broken tank.

A sticker on my car gas tank says "unleaded only" Can I use diesel :?

haha funny most of the time its just the bottom *** but be a little ***** man.

:) All you need to check if glass is tempered or not is two polarized lenses. The search is down right now or I'd find the thread that explains the process really well, if any of the premium members are reading this try a search for "polarized tempered". I'd think that would pull it up.

Its a polarascope....2 polarized lenses and hold them up to it and if the stress lines are all uniform then its untempered if their all over their tempered...

If the tank says don't drill it, that's a clue to not drill it. I'm pretty sure if a tank is larger than 55 gallons it's usually tempered, but I'm no expert I just read a little... As to the other issue, there is a thread under the equipment heading about drilling and how to tell if a tank is polarized and/or drillable, but I don't remember the title...

I have 75 which I can't drill and I'm not a happy camper about it. I'm thinking of buying a predrilled instead of overflow equipment. My question then is side or centered drilled better? Which circulates the tank better? I was thinking about adding korallias.. but not sure which would be best suited.. I was thinking fish and inverts for the tank.. Any thoughts??

mfishies,

What kind of tank do you have? My 75g is still dry and i want to drill and the only thing i can find from the manufacture is that the bottom is tempered. I have an Aqueon. about 3 months old

125 gallon tanks sides are rarely tempered. If the glass is >3/8 inch I can be almost certain that it is not tempered.

Power on laptop.
Open up to a solid white screen. (Brightest possible image)
Hold the laptop in the aquarium, screen facing you.
Put on your polarized glasses.
With the glass between you and the laptop screen, have a look-see.

Easiest way without moving the tank out to your windshield or something. lol

what exactly did the sticker say? my 125 had a sticker on the bottom the said "tempered glass do not drill" and i drilled the sides with no problem meaning just the bottom was tempered....my 55g on the otherhand had a sticker on the bottom that said "all sides tempered do not drill" so i took that as what it said that they were all tempered and didnt drill it :p they say if you wear polarized sunglasses and look from the side you could tell if its tempered or not, if its tempered i think theres suposed to be blotches or somethng but i never seen them personally
HTH!

I've drilled several tanks that had that sticker. It means the bottom is tempered.
