Do you ever have to make those large purchases where it hurts your budget so bad, you just want to crawl in a hole? Does that $1000 chiller, $2000 generator, or $500 skimmer just make you want to quit the hobby?

I'm about to make a fairly large purchase for necessities (test kits, salt, MH Bulb, etc) and it makes me feel so dirty. But, my wife was fine with it because she knows it's necessary.

She sounds like a keeper!

If I make a large purchase and my wife finds out...she will make me cry :( :D

No, The large pieces are easy because that means the wife will know about them, it's the smaller ones that I bring home every day. I can buy a $250. calcium monitor because I can hide it under the stand, but the fast swimming powder blue tang-not so easy to hide. I put this tank together and filled it last year so She keeps a eye on my addiction.

Nope I do not not, I only wish I could get by with a $1000 chiller, I may have to get a new one at $2000. now that hurts but I know it is worth it for the health of my marine life

my wife makes her own money so she doesnt say anything to me...plus, she knows that I would pay the bills before I blew the money.

I feel dirty when I buy niceties but I feel feel like quitting when I have to spend hundreds on necesities :(:( I feel ya man

No crying (maybe a little cringing lol), Easy come, Even easier to go lol. I'm 1000 in on the tank and rock. So much more to do :D

I'm a poor man's reefer.

I have a 30 gallon that I just started up, and I had a 15 gallon for awhile before then.

All my frags I got free, or bought from a fellow reefer for like $5. Yesterday I bought some red zoanthids for $15, and I felt horrible. I'm in trouble when I set up the big tank. :D

LoL...my wife make me act like a crackhead trying to hide all the stuff I buy for my tank. Not that she minds, but I guess it'a bit like how I feel when I see her buy shoes. ;)

my wife works for our bank and has constant watch over the account...

thank god the build im finishing up now came from a truck i sold that i had before i met her...

oh whats that dear? ya i just spent $875 on power heads

I only cry if I made a large purchase for something and it either dies or doesn’t improve the situation that I made the purchase for in the first place.

What gets me is not the $2000 generator or the $1000 chiller, but having your wife show you your income/expenses statement for the year and realising you have spent $15000 in the past year alone on your hobby :(

What I can't believe is that when I go shopping online, it's not for shoes and clothes anymore -- it's reef stuff. Husband looking over my shoulder, just shakes his head and calls me a "Reef Geek".

When asked the question, "How much did that cost?" I just say "too much" and smile real big.

Everything is a large purchase when you are only 15. ;)

I couldn't have said it better myself!!! For instance I was at the store yesterday and wanted 4 fighting conchs (7.99 each). Thats 32.00 plus tax. That wasn't too bad, but once i got to looking around I wanted the black misbar clown pair (29.99 each) and acro frag (29.99). Together it would probably be around $150, needless to say I only left with the conchs... I know that might not sound bad for all of you buy $1000 chillers and whatnot, but for me thats a big purchase saying as my 2 week check is rarely over $200.

I agree with you on this one.

I only cried once on the inside and that was when I first realized that I was gonna have to step up my game or get out of the hobby. I sat on the fence for a while, then marched on and never cried or looked back since...
