I keep reading about terpenes and chemical warfare. It's got me thinking about leathers and how dangerous they could be. So many people in this hobby say that their corals do well for awhile then some die inexplicably. I am beginning to wonder if some mystery deaths couldn't be attributed to leathers. I am most particularly interested in hearing from people who keep SPS and Zoas with leathers, but I'd like everyone's input. How big are your leathers and how long have things gone well in your tank? Do you run carbon?

I have had a leather in my tank for about 2 years. It was one of my first corals that I added and it hosts my clowns. I have various sps and several different zoas and can't really say that I have ever had a problem. I started running gfo/carbon about 6 months after the leather was added to help with some algae issues and am still running.

I've got several leathers in my mixed reef and have been keeping them for years. I run carbon 24/7.

Mixed reef, I don't run any carbon. have some devils hand and cabbage for almost a year and they are both thriving. I have them in back of tank close to some acans and gsp. No issues yet and I don't foresee any.

Leathers were the first addition to my tank. I now run carbon 24/7 but even before I started I didn't see any issues.

Can you send me the link to where you read that leathers could be dangerous? I'm curious.

Also I don't have many zoas in my tank but I do have some. I just started with SPS and have a nice acro and a monti that are doing well in same tank

Just google 'Alleopathy' or 'Terpenes' along with 'Leather Coral' and all kinds of articles pop up. This hobby has so many different opinions and experiences.

Sounds. Like most people aren't finding it to be a problem in the short term.
Anyone keep leathers with SPS longer than five years?

Ok, I added a toadstool to the new tank. I hope this isn't a big mistake. The SPS have been doing well up till now. Let's see what happens...

I have a brown toadstool leather that does very well, a green toadstool leather that never seems to open and just acquired a green finger leather

We have a mixed reef that we raised a sprout out of a large leather over the past 2 1/2 years. We traded off the parent leather. Many zoas, SPS, and LPS with no problems. Have run carbon on and off over the past 2 1/2 years. We migrated to a larger tank about 6 months ago and the leather migrated to. The picture is from the right hand end view with the leather almost centered. Stands about 6"-7" tall now.

I've got a yellow fiji, and would be interested in an ora neon toadstool and neon green sinularia, but haven't found any nice ones. I don't really like any other leathers. I run carbon 24/7 and have had no problems that I can attribute to the leathers.
