We have a 250g and a 220g storage tank and just started to get NSW delivered.

Water changes in 5 tanks now take 30 minutes...sure beats hauling the jugs around :) Not to mention it was taking a toll on my car also.

I read a while back in some study of salts and sea urchin mortality(?), TMP got good scores. Took me a while to find a place that sold it but they only had one box, cost an arm and 2/3 of a leg. Didnt get enough to really examine if in the long term it was better for my tank than IO. I use LFS premixed now because i am lazy.

There was a sea urchin larvae study that was written about in RK mag a few years back. It had 6 or 7 salts, plus natural saltwater, plus seasoned water from 2 hobbyists tanks. I think the one that stood out was Crystal Seas Marinemix Bioassay. After that article came out, a lot of people switched, and a disturbing number of people watched every acro in their tank crash and burn. Not just newbies, we're talking about people with tons of hobby experience and TOTM quality systems. No one really knows why that happened.

After reading about that, I resolved that I will never switch salt brands in a running tank. That's why I use IO, because it's always readily available.

I live a couple of blocks from the beach. Once a week I stop on the way home from work and fill my jugs. Free water, plus I get a refreshing swim. Best possible situation.

ive actually been told that natural sea water is best but its a good idea to get it a few miles out that way there arnt any pollutants in it ;)

how much do you pay for that??

depending on who you use and where you live I pay 50-60 for 250-300/g monthly thats only a 25% change for me. For most where that is to much you can buy a 150/g container and do weekly changes which is even better

where do you get it from??? that price seems pretty good

I forgot where I was but I read a huge article pertaining to the use of synthetic sea water vs. natural sea water. I read that if you chose to get nsw, it should most definitely be farther out because of the pollutants that lie close to shore. However, in the end the article determined that synthetic sea water was better for a home aquarium because the synthetic water will last considerabley longer and maintain stability longer than natural sea water. I don't remember exactly why, but I know it had something to do with the die off that occurs in nsw. Wish I could find that article right about now...

easiest answer is look up paulb the oldest tank on rc i think almost 30 years on NSW from long island sound. I know our water is better than that and hes got a great looking tank.

been using NSW for at least a couple of years with no problems. i work with rob at exotic aquatic and he has been using it for at least 7-8 years since he opened the store and has had absolutely no problems with his systems and or with customers tanks. i think it is easier to get a load of water that is ready to go rather than wait for the ro system to make water then go buy the salt, mix it up and wait a day or two to use it. too much time for me, so, NSW FTW!
