Do you SURFACE skimming your Anemone tank

Hi all,

I am just wondering if you surface skimming your anemone tanks? I have a DT tank that has an overflow box and it draws water to the sump and then return the water to the DT.

in another system I have the tank with no overflow.

In neither system I run carbon, skimmer or any reactor. I am not even sure why I need to draw the water in the DT tank to the sump and then return it back.

I read and they said it is BEST to have the surface skimmed.

If anything running a sump adds extra water volume and let's you hide your heaters. Keeping nems off heaters is a must not to mention heaters look ugly in a display tank.

My overflows have teeth and skim the surface. The one has an acrylic piece slid behind the teeth though because the mag in that tank randomly wanders and I don't want the teeth to butcher him.

Is surface skimming a must? Eh not really but it does help keep that layer of surface scum gone. And the way my tanks are viewed you could see it if it were there.

I don't have a sump, nor a protein skimmer, nor reactors, nor any mechanical filtration. I just have tons of flow and tons of sponge and xenia.

thanks guys, it look like I only need the sump for the heaters as mentioned. i am planning of going sumpless if i can find a way to conceal my heaters.

i was just curious if i really need to surface skim to keep my nems healthy

Surface skimming remove the organic layer on top of the water. Without it, you will see a film on top of the surface.
I don't keep anemone by themselves so I need to add Ca, Alkalinity and Mag, Skimmer, heater and other junk. Keep them away from the tank.

I like it best when all I have showing is the tank, the animals and small PH's in the. I have heater, fan to cool the tank, auto top off, protein skimmer and pumps for the additive. All in the sump

+1.... Sumps are useful for acclimating animals in them, providing food for current animals, filtration, hiding things (for me, top off, calc\alk dosing, skimmer, GFO\Carbon reactor) you name it...

The only thing in my tank are my two MP40s.

I cant afford to have all these sumps for each systems I have so..... no sump, no surface skim it is.... for now and see if their health will be effected by it.

I use an Eheim Skim 350 in my 50 gal anemone/clam tank (non-drilled). Fairly unobtrusive against a black background. Keeps the surface clear from film as long as you keep the sponge on the inside clean (I rinse it about every two weeks). When surface film starts building up, my clam gets angry and starts moving around to try and get more light.
