Do you use Carbon ?

I am curious as to who uses carbon in their tanks ? Has any experimented with using and removing carbon. Where there any noticeable effects ?

I always notice water clarity increase after I change my carbon if I left it to long

I have used carbon 24/7/365 pretty much since day 1, and that was some time around 10,220 or more days ago. I know when it is depleted when my water begins to yellow, most noticeable looking lengthwise through the tank. It was especially important when I had my 60g cube running - it was skimmerless so there was no other good way to get the dissolved organics out of the water.

without carbon - particulate water, fish tank odor.
with carbon - fish look like they're floating in air, girlfriend doesn't complain my tank stinks.
as far as i'm concerned the only reason i would stop running carbon at this point is because i kept a tang which i don't.

I run carbon in a reactor. I do the white bucket test which shows how yellow my water is. I also tested after not changing carbon for a month and the par was down 20 to 25%. My tank also starts to smell if I don't run it.

Carbon makes the water crystal clear only downside I could possibly say is if you let it tumble in a reactor it will turn your skimmer black. Don't let it tumble, it's effective even placed in a bag in your summer. I think if your running zeovit you need to use their carbon other than that go nuts!

Has anyone experimented with carbon. For example run carbon for a few months and then run with out carbon for a few months ? Were there any noticeable effects besides the clear water. Did you notice any positive/ negative effects from coral etc.

The only thing I notice when I take mine offline is a slight yellowing in the water. Nothing else changes. I keep it off until I feel the water needs a good scrubbing.

Are we talking dosing carbon or using charcoal? I dose carbon (vinegar, vodka) continuously with a dosing pump to reduce NO3 and PO4 and run GAC (granulated activated charcoal) in a reactor for clarity. Charcoal also removes certain impurities.

My par readings drop about 20 to 25% if I don't run carbon for a few weeks. According to a BRS video the yellowing in the water causes it.

I do because I've got a mixed reef with leathers, LPS, SPS and fish. The leathers do a chemical thing that upsets the whole tank. Running carbon eliminates this. I use about a cup full in a bag that I keep in my overflow and I change it once a month.
