i had a patch of some brown zoas on a rock of favia and i was tole the zoas would move off or be killed by the favia. the zoas ended up killing my favia and taking over the whole rock good for them but not for me i bought the piece for the favia not the zoas. will this happen everytime zoas are very close to another coral? if not what corals will it not take over?

Depends on the type of zoas that are on there and the other type of coral. It sounds like you got brown button polyps which are invasive and nasty. I would probably get rid of the whole rock. I try and put my zoas on rocks by themselves so I don't have to deal with the issues of corals stinging each other.

Some LFS are very good and some are bad. Sometimes very good ones make mistakes as well. There is a famous store here in NJ that a buddy of mine bought the most amazing chalice from and they had it on a rock with kenya tree and something else that was stinging it to death. He quickly cut the junk off and it is now an amazing chalice. Was the LFS stupid for that move, yeah but they are still an amazing store.

I have never had Zoas cause an issue, but Paly's are a pain and I generally hate them! I know that's probably not popular here but they get taller, and larger and starve the shorter zoas of light, and the green and brown button polyps are one of the worst corals out there in my opinion. They are hard to get rid of sometimes.

Nothing, when you flip it back they will be right there waiting for ya.

They sure will be ! Take the whole rock out if you have to and you can. You could see if someone local wants it or bring it in to your LFS as some people do like and want these in their tank.
Maybe they will even trade you for a piece of clean Live Rock. HTH

Not to hijack the thread. I am a newbie and I have the same type of brown zoa's. I don't like them and want to get rid of them. I can't really get rid of the rock without the whole scaping coming down. Is it possible to remove while still in the tank? How?

The zoas can't kill the Favia in couple of hours, so that's probably in part your fault. Sorry for the sincerity. Just trying to help you for the next time.

No, it won't happen to all the species of zoa.
That will depend on the conditions of the system also.
If the system is better for the zoa and the coral is not doing so great...

Hard to say what corals will it not take over. Best thing to do is to avoid and place zoas in individual rocks. That way your corals will be safe.

Please try to learn about compatibility before getting the corals too, because some corals will be aggressive towards other species and you'll have worse problems.

Grandis.
