Doc 9020

catastrofe

Hi Roger,

I'm currently running a Euro Reef CS8-1 and I'm in the market for a new skimmer. I have about 110gal total system volume (heavily stocked), and I wet skim. . .the collection cup on my ER fills (to the point of overflow) in about 24 hours.

I'm interested in a 9020 (I know, overkill) but I have limited space in my cabinet. I have 24" of available height, but no room for a skimmate container.

Are there collection cups available that I can use in lieu of the foam extraction units?

Would they work within my height restrictions?

If I somehow found a place for a skimmate container, would a 24" cabinet height be enough for easy removal and cleaning of the foam extractors?

Also, can you compare the performace of this unit and the 9010 (my other Tunze option for wet skimming) to the Euro Reef?

Thanks and happy holidays.

Bob

The collection cups will not fit. You would be able to remove the risers in a 24" space. I have not used a Euroreef sine the first versions with Eheim pumps. I really cannot give a fair assessment and the answer is not simple, different skimmers remove different compounds in various amounts so one skimmer may excel and removing proteins and another at cellulose and capsaicin or other compounds. I think the 9020 would most likely compare favorably to a CS8-1, but a 9010 is a much smaller skimmer and I would probably put that more in the range of a CS6-1. Keep in mind these are biased guestimates and not valid in any real way, I think both are good skimmers. Really, once you leave the mass market $200 or less skimmers they are all pretty good. It is like taking a jump from a $10,000 car to a $50,000 car, once you get into $50,000 cars it is subtle details and personal preferences which set them apart and unlike how the difference from a $10,000 car to a $50,000 car is great, the difference from $50,000 to $100,000 is not so much.
