Doctor64776's 400gallon Show 700gallon System

you ever consider switching to Mg chloride, chris?

I've been using it with great success for a couple years now. It mixes way better, and you can get it 100lbs at a time for cheap cheap.

So we all know that you are in LOVE with this tank. If you had to do it over again, would you consider going deeper? Im now considering a tank of that size. but 96" X 48"X 36" deep wit 6"of sand in the bottom, like yours, with the sides covered so you dont see the icky sides

I don't mean to answer for the doc, but 36" deep would have some problems. First and foremost, lighting the bottom would probably require 400W halides (or probably T5's with great reflectors) if you want SPS or clams anywhere near the substrate. If you're short like me, you'd have a tough time servicing the bottom of the tank as well. But your dimensions sound incredibly beautiful and I'd love to see it! BTW, good luck with your residency ... shouldn't you be in the OR?

Hello Gang :)

I have been usuing a mixture of Mg sulfate and Mg Cloride Now the level seem more stable.. LOL BUT Seacheam tells me MG is at 1250 and Salifert says 1440 .. Much better than the 900 that I found it at 2 mo ago..

I spent alot of time planning my tank and I seriously considered the deeper versions... 36" BUt Thankfully I did not go that deep.. even now I often find my face in the water or I must reef naked just to reach the bottom of the tank for mantainance. A good bit of advice is to have the front of the tank set 2-4 inches under the rim of the display wall to hide the gunk that accumulates under the sand.. this is much more astetically pleasing

I found the same thing with the Seachem and Salifert test kits when testing mag. I found the Salifert more reliable/accurate by testing the results against a reef calculator. I tested the water, worked out how much supplement to add and added it, then tested again. The Salifert kit was pretty close. HTH.

Hooked the Kalk up to a doser.. Now it runs for 1min every 5 min and has really stabilized my PH alot

OK... so I have looked around to find pics that you havent already seen LOL I think I have posted most of them for your insatiably starry reef eyes :) SOOO I took some more new pics I hope they satisfy... mostly stuff from the Lab..
This is the side where most of the controller stuff is... I have moved the laptop to a rotateing stand so that I would have more room for the Mg tank up there on the Left.. I really like the new laptop swivel soo convienient

doc..I am swaping my 75 fuge for a 150 and been thinking of going with the plenum this time. ANy input??

I love when you post pics....any updated display pics,,

Hello,

The Mangrove swamp is in a 55 gallon tank that had been my Plenum and refugium... I pulled MOST of the Macros out and moved them to the sump with in outer baffles and then placed the Magroves into the 55 they seem to be growing well and are very easy to care for... Many new leaf sprouts... I got a great deal on them from "Goomart" out of Hawaii I bought 50 for ??? up 59.99 plus like $20 shipping ... Very happy

Erics ... I am still running the Plenum and I see many colors of anerobic bacteria colonies there... streaked up through the sand so I know that there IS flow I am unable to actually measure any benefits but I am also unable to measure any harm... so I like to think that it is doing the GOOD things that I have read about LOL But since I do not have control tanks I just cannot be definitive... Optimistically I am very happy with both the Plenum and the Mangroves

as for upping to 150 Yes absolutely a good idea .. More volume is always good... the solution to pollution is dillution I run the main tank as 400 gal show but them have an equal 400gal as sump fuge and prop tanks I like to think that the extra volume helps to dilute things out :)

I will work on some display pics :)
