Does actinic supplemental light help?

I'm thinking of adding 40 watts of 50/50 in addition to a 150HQI 14K for a 24 gallon. Does the additional spectrum help growth for SPS? Or am i adding too much heat for the tank?

I don't know about growth other than the fact that there is more light per gallon. However, the jury is still out as far as color is concerned. For me, it helps because I don't like the yellow in 10kk bulbs

well i'm using a 14k so i have enough blue. i was just wondering if sps would appreciate the broader spectrum of 10 to actinics

Just so you know a 50/50 bulb does not look blue man. If you want actinic, you need to get ACTINIC. Will the spectrum help the corals grow? Probably not. However, it will make the corals flouresce nicely. I have phoenix 14k bulbs and I run 2 T5 Blue+ bulbs as well to get a bit more pop.

I wonder what the long term effect of "forced" fluorescence does to corals. Guess having a test on this that spans a year is just not practical :)

Yes it does!! I pretty much run only actinic bulbs on my system (VHO). I have to tell you i have the most amazing colors coming out. I think its the secret to truelly amazing color. Also the color is not only seen under the actinic. When i turn my daylights on for a couple days out of the week the colors are still amazing. The actinic will help your colors of the sps, not just the apearance of the tank.

this is the way it was explained to me. but by know means is this is to down play lighting in any way,

6,500k yellow light fast growth
20,000k slower growth better colors
