Does anybody use this Salt

This salt is fantastic...it mixes clear n consistent and tests consistent from batch to batch...it has slightly more elevated levels of calcium n alk compared to NSW but thats because its designed towards a captive reef.

I have used BIO-SEA by the same company with amazing results...I will never go back to using the other brand.

dont take my word for it till you try it...

So I guess the extra expense is not worth it, just stick with instance ocean.

I wouldnt say that without giving the product a try....

I agree, try and if you see positive results, then you know. If everything stays the same, well then maybe it's not worth it. One thing for sure is, it won't harm your tank.

considering the s-15 report is apparently bogus, the scores used to "rate" aqua craft and other brand salts are pretty much worthless. the fact that most of the info is old, and provided by the aqua craft brand makes it easy to see why they got a perfect score, they paid for the study! anyway, i was about to buy some of their cheaper salt until i checked up on the S-15 report. based on what i found, I really doubt they are any better than IO or RC.

I used IO or RC for years. I just switched to Coral Life and love it. It has a higher calcium and magnesium than the other 2. I would say as long as your alk is 3.5-4.0, calcium is above 400, magnesium is 1200-1300 and PH is above 8.1 your using a good salt. RC calcium was about 340 and magnesium was at 900 so I dumped it.

They are not based on my experience. Basically you really can't wrong with any of the major brands. Here's some good unbiased salt info from the guys in the Chemistry Forum, worth the read ;)

ta_lewis if you dont want to spend the extra $$ on Marine Environment and still want to try another brand try BIO-SEA by the same company...its cheaper than ME but is a pretty good product.

I've used both Marine Environment & Bio Sea for about 5 years until I couldn't find a local supplier for it. I used to buy it from a local fish store (now out of business) called T'is for Fish, located on the intersection of Brookhurst & Edinger in Costa Mesa, CA till they stopped carrying it. Then I found another store in Tustin called Fish 2000 that carried Marine Environment for a while, then they stopped stocking it. They were more expensive than other salts, & not selling as well, so they stopped carrying them, but they are the best salt on the market. I've had purple striped trochus snails spawn & produce viable babies that grew to adults using these salts. When I started in the hobby, I used Instant Ocean, & Coral Life for several years & never got any baby snails. I was surprise to find baby snails everywhere in my sump after I switched to Marine Environment. I would also occasionally buy some Bio Sea & didn't notice any adverse effects. When I switched to Instant Ocean again due the availability of Marine Environment, I gradually noticed less baby snails until I stopped seeing them. I stopped seeing the snails spawn by spewing a cloudy stream of milt & eggs from their sides & stopped finding baby snails in my 180 gal tank nor in the sump like I used to see them before the switch. Changing salt brand was the only major thing I did to the system.
And for those of you that are thinking that I work for Marine Environment or get kickbacks from them, the answer is no. I just thought it's time I share a little something after lurking in RC for so many years.

IMHO - ( and some would argue about the "H")....

If you are going to be using additives in the tank - what *IS* the point in paying more for basic salt?

Every brand has a large display somewhere that they wave the banner about their brand. Scores of "tests" are available that support this -or - that brand as THE BEST................

The real truth is YOU have to feel good about your choice of salts. But don't switch brands to "solve a problem"... The problem is almost never that of the salt - (unless you have tested the batch and found PO4 or NO3 - bad old phosphate and nitrate - extrordinarily rare)

Everything you will hear from other hobbyists - even me - about "why" they use this or that salt brand is based on anecdotal experience, NOT science and fact.

So - pick the one you like. For what ever reasons you want. Then, test the tank on a regular basis, and add the supplements that YOUR particular tank needs. It is that simple.

Good Luck!

personally, i have noticed better results with some salts in SOME tanks and not others. Tropic Marin for example grows less algae in a 350 gallon FOWLR tank i maintain than instant ocean. this is with 2 x monthly 100 gallon water changes. in other tanks there are no noticeable differences in algae growth with less frequent/smaller water changes. my guess is that due to the high bio load and heavy feeding, this system rides a fine line in nutrient content where the other tanks, including mine are more forgiving in the amount of nutrients needed to sustain an algae problem.
if i could afford the high $$$ salt i would use it but id rather put the money i save towards coral or fish since i cant justify the expense.

on a different note, Does anyone here use MEI salt? it is/was? made here in baltimore but i dont use it due to incomplete/very slow dissolving of the salt. it stays cloudy for hours after pouring it into the water! i never really gave it a chance as far as using it long term in any tanks.

Ive read about 45 pages from the general guide to salt mixes thread and it really was an eye opener....

I believe that quality comes with a slightly bigger price tag...so it could be the same with salt mixes....or maybe not....

:)

Sounds like a conclusive "maybe"....
It is like brands of motor oil, or automobiles. Pick the one you like.
You can be sucessful with virtually any of them, as long as you recognize where your choice exceeds, or lacks in one way or another.
There is NO perfect salt - because, there is NO perfect aquarium ( or aquarist).

To summarize the General salt mix guide thread in a sentence look for the main 3 numbers Calc, Alk, Magnesium and ensure that the baddies aren't elevated.

and what Teesquare said above this post.....

Forget the report and the hype...

Just try a bucket of the salt and see for yourself.

Couldn't have said it better myself.....One of the best salts there is...I have tried them all. Best overall results.
