I wanted to buy a 75 gallon tank and drill it. However, i'm nervous on doing it myself plus no tools for job. I was wondering if anyone does it and price?
was at aqua ocean in toms river the other day and saw they do it for $50 a hole. i would just get a hole saw from glass-holes and do it myself though. thats what i did. i was super nervous also but its fairly easy. heres what i did.
take a piece of plywood and cut out a stencil (a hole thats the same size you want to drill) but don't use the hole saw, it will wear the bit. i used a small jigsaw to cut the stencil.
then i clamped the stencil over where i wanted to drill the hole. then i started drilling nice and slow. you just have to apply a very little bit of pressure and let the saw do all the work. i kept a jug of water nearby and had my dad slowly pour water on it while i was drilling.
the trickiest part is when you get to the very end. this is when you want to apply the least amount of pressure possible to avoid any shards from chipping off. i couldn't really do it perfectly so my holes had a few small chips. the bulkheads still worked great and they dont leak.
Its a really simple process. THe easiest way that i have found to prevent chipping is to duct tape the back of the glass so that when the glass cant fall. Not only does this prevent the other side from cracking but it also prevents the inside chipping severely. If you really need help pm me. Im close in Belleville. I can help you or just do it depending on the size hole you need
