Hi,
I've asked a couple of times, but I need to know where I can get some good live rock? I need about 75 pounds. I also would like to avoid bad hitchhikers. Thank you.

There are lots of sites to purchase LR. Off the top of my head, here are a few:
tbsSaltwater.com
Reefer Madness
Doctors Foster and Smith
SharkysReef.com
FragFarmer.com
reefhotspot.com
liveaquaria.com
marinedepotlive.com
phishybusiness.com
aquariumfish.net

Ok, Im getting tired of typing sites :D
Do an MSN search for "live rock" you'll get plenty of hits and also you can do a google search which may pull some hits that msn doesn't.....

Good Luck and Happy Reefing,

I have ordered LR from Liveaquaria(good fiji and lalo), Marine Depot Live(Fiji), and Premium Aquatics(Marshall Island(great rock) and Kaelini). All were excellent rock. I would rate Premium aquatics and Liveaquaria over Marinedepotlive. If you don't want to many unwanted hitchhikers I would cgo with fully cured rock from who ever you buy from.

I like the Eva Rocks. How much did that run you? Shipping and rocks etc? I think I am going to need about 75 pounds =/ Man it's expensive this hobby.

JUst a thought if you are handy with your hands you can try making your own rock. there are plenty of how to's on RC in the DIY forum and on the GARP site. its fun and you can make your own shapes to suit your needs then seed it with a little live rock. it takes awhile to get to where it looks good but it is easy on the wallet, purse. :)

Marinegirl411,

The Eva was billed at $273.00/75# as shown on their site here:
http://www.livestockusa.org/ROCK.html

The shipping was $60.69 to Iowa. That puts the cost per pound right at 4.44, or so my calculator says. I think it is a little lower though as the total weight was 80# and I am positive that the packaging was not all of 5 pounds.

Hangles,

I spent a number of years (about 8) playing with Man Made Live Rock. Check out my site and posts history on RC. :-) I still have a tank full, but it simply can't touch this, so I decided to try something different this time around.

thanks Bene'
I have just finished curing my first batch and placed a couple in the tank. my rock are not porous like yours. i used to much sand. but they have a good texture. i plan on useing mine for mostly base then adding live on top. I was able to get white cement but it still took six weeks to cure. I used oyster shell in my mix and im reading that makes curing a pain? I dug for awhile to find all the info i could . then after i make my rock all kinds of new information shows up. :D thanks for sharing your info. heres a quick pic of my tank so far.

the rest are in my gallery.
See Ya !

I've read about making the live rock, but I don't think I could do it. I don't know. If I get the eva should I cure it in my aquarium I will be putting it in? I should probably leave it bare bottom right? Thank you. ;-)

hangles,

No problem, give it time, they will liven up. Looking good so far! I could write a several hundred page book on the stuff if I had the time. Just stay away from using salt, and other nasties, in your mixes and it can work ok.

MarineGirl411,

I dare not answer your questions with specifics, there are too many working philosophies one can use to setup and maintain a reef tank already. Saying one way is better (or the "right" one) is typically only semi educated opinion at best, or pure guesswork or hearsay at worst.

A better question to ask yourself would be what do you want to keep in your tank and how do you want it to look in the future?

After you answer that, look for a current philosophy that will provide the best possible environment for that goal. From there, look for working examples, filter the facts out of the B.S., and develop your plan. Then work your plan and adjust according to what goes on in your tank.
