Does anyone know why my maroon kicks my sand bed?

Ever since I added my rbta, my maroon has been kicking the sand bed ocasionally. Does anyone know why they do this? It gets annoying cuz my tank would be all cloudy every half hr. Thanks.

They do that alot. Simple as that. My Clarki will do a tailspin then roam the tank to see how good a job she did making a mess. Just get used to it. My Cinnamon Clown did the same thing. Wich I believe is pretty similar or the same as a Maroon. They enjoy that for some reason. My Clarki dug the whole 4 inch sandbed to the glass where she sleeps...

But I don't hold it against her.

That pic is nothing. Imagine a 6 inch clown in a 29 gallon tank. She can make a snowstorm in 2 seconds. But for some reason she likes it. Who am I to argue.

If you have a decent flow the sand dissapears in a few minutes.

I've kept 2 different species of clowns now, and I gotta say, they kick the sand out of wherever they are hosting. If you have an anemone, the sand below them gets cleared out, if they host a powerhead, same thing. I think they should have been called "House-cleaner" fish instead of clowns....lol.

Hehe yeah they are funny and amusing. That's what makes them special. And gets them there own section on the board.

Clownfish like to get high off the gasses trapped deep in the sandbed. It's their fix.

Off topic question.


I see it is a 6 inch deep sand bed.

Any problems with it being so deep?

Others keep saying to keep it at 2 inches.

Mine is currently around 3 inches.

Deeper the sandbed the more volume to store all types of organics, inorganics, detritus, gases, etc...

To each his own but if not properly maitained a really DSB can be a bomb waiting to explode. No worries...lol

They kick the sand looking for buried critters they can eat. All my clowns do it.

My clowns do it as well, but I never see them pick at the sand afterwards as if they were looking for food...maybe I just miss it.

Mine are definitely not looking for food. They do it and then move away. I have also seen them pick up mouths full of sand/small rocks and move them to another area.
